?

Am I right to buy parts knowing what car I want?

  1. Of course, if the price is right!

I need a Blue Oval project, and have loved Comets/Mavericks since Day1. My first love is 66/67 Fairlanes, which are unobtainable at my budget. I'm buying parts now that will make my dream of a V8 Comet Gt/Grabber happen when I find a solid start.

My better 2/3rds thinks I'm nuts, is she right?

Bob, the headers will fit a lot of different Fords even Fairlanes :)

What are you looking for and the price range, I keep a pretty close eye on Mavs and Comets in this neck of the woods. Just keep checking craiagslist as most of the cars recently have come from you neck of the woods

    Look at it this way...

If you don't find the car and decide to go another route, you can always sell the parts and more than likely get your money back.

On the other hand, if you go ahead and buy things like the V8 mounts, Belly Bar, etc., you can clean them up now and have the parts painted and ready for installation when the right car is found.

Even if the right car ends up having the parts you purchase and refurbish now, you can still resell the parts that you end up not needing. Besides, having something to work on now will keep up your interests in the vehicle of question instead of becoming constantly frustrated by not having something to do.

I hope this answers your question somewhat,

The only problem with buying parts for a car that you haven't found yet is you very well could wind up with duplicate parts.

Sounds like you are looking for a project?

I speak from experience, save up your money and buy a completed car. You will be money ahead buying a Maverick or Comet with nice paint and body work.

You will never find the prefect finished car. Find something in a color that you like and the rest (wheels, disc brakes, hopped up V8, small bumpers, GT/Grabber bits, and other personal touches) can be done over your lifetime while you enjoy a car.

Do you have the long term storage space, technical know how, tools, and untold amount of hours per month (you will tell yourself that this will take a few months, but in reality it will be years) spent in the garage doing it yourself?

Go for it, if it is something that you want then buy the parts and get the Comet / Maverick later. A few years ago i had a guy show up at my house looking for a Maverick part that i had for sale in the local swap paper. When he came to my house i asked him what year his Maverick was? He said he did not have a Maverick. I remember saying that your buying parts for a car you don't own. I thought he was nuts. Years later he has a beautiful Maverick and drives all over the place to car shows and has even had it at the MCCI, MCG and the NMCC events. So here is a guy that bought a Maverick part off of me before he had a car and now has one. Buy your parts, get your car later.:D(y) Do what makes you happy!!!!

let me put it this way. if you know what car you're going to get for sure then yeah go for it. most of these parts for classic cars arent getting any easier to find unless you're willing to settle for repops and then you risk getting a cheaply made one. although i cant tell you how many stories i've heard/read where someone knew exactly what they were looking for, went out looking to buy one, and either fell in love with or just ended up with another car. now if that happens, and you get one in the same family you might be able to cross parts over anyways and you'll be fine, but you never know what will pop up if you look in the right places. and as said before, you could probably resell the parts so i didnt even take not needing them into account. and if nothing else, keep em as spares, but like i said, the parts are getting harder to find, and chances are you'll probly be able to sell em for more than you paid if you hold onto em for a while, or maybe trade em for hard to find parts for the car you get if you dont end up with what you originally intended.

good luck on your search, hope something i said can be of help. (this may be the most coherent post i've ever made...:hmmm:)

I looked for my ideal Mav for 2 years and never did find it. I wanted a good body and paint Grabber 302 A/C car. The last thing I wanted to do was body and paint. I ended up with the car I have now since it was so rust free I couldnt pass it up and risk another lengthy search for a solid car. No Grabber and no A/C. Ended up at work in our body shop for over a year stripping it.

Great idea. That car is a steal at 3500. If I was only closer it would be in my driveway.

It's not hard to find good cars, I had another rust-free Grabber fall into my lap 3 weeks ago. Buy the parts while you can find them cheap.
