My mav project is under way. I just pick up the short block from the machine shop, now I need to figure out what cam I want to throw in it. The motor is a 302 pulled out of an 84 crown vic and will be mated to the aod pulled out of that car as well (using the stock converter). I'm using an offy split intake with e7 heads. What do you all think would be a good cam for this combo? Eye candy!
Looks nice. I think you can go Comp Cams website, they have a sheet to fill out that will help you with cam selection.
I think I have my cam choice down to 2 cams. 2122 - Edelbrock Performer-Plus Cam D 270/280 L 448/472 COMP Cams CL31-218-2 - D 268/268 L.456/.456 What do you guys think? I'm afraid to go any bigger with a stock converter on a DD.
My car is a DD, and that Comp cam is the same one I'm running. Pretty good for a usable power band. It pulls hard at 5500, but still idles at 500. Lots of torque, but it doesn't feel like it's wheezing out when you want to step on it either. Not at all. It has plenty of power, and I'm pretty happy with it. I have a 2500 stall but it ran just fine before I put that in too.
Time to get this back on track. (I've been caught up in my R/C world) I went with the Performer Plus cam and have the rest of the motor sorted out. Now I can't make up my mind with the tranny. I was thinking if I can use the flex plate that was on the motor when it was still in the vic. With the stock 250 mav converter and tranny that would be the cheapest/easiest route since I have all the parts already. Does anyone know if that will work? If not I also have an AOD sitting around. I'm just not sure about the driveshaft, tv cable, and shifter(do I need a floor shifter?). But I was also pondering the idea of a T5. I'm sure I could work out the pedal and cable since I already did once with the vic. But again I'm not sure about the driveshaft. Im really leaning towards the c4 in the mav if anyone knows if that felxplate wil work or what one will work it would be greatly appciated. Thanks!
I really doubt that the 6 cylinder flexplate would work at all. The flexplate has to have the right amount of balance weight for the motor. Early 302s and all 351s use 28 oz, and later 302s use 50 oz. I have no idea what the 6 cylinder stuff uses. If you have that AOD sitting there, Frank "71 Gold" makes crossmembers to bolt that in. That is probably your biggest hurdle. A floor shifter ought to be easy to get aftermarket. TV cable adapter ought to be out there somewhere too. These swaps are a lot more common now. I have read that you might want to stick with the stock convertor in the AOD. If you go to a looser convertor, changing the rear axle to a 3:55 or higher might be in order. The concern was convertor slip while cruising in OD.
Summit has some pretty cheap cams with good grinds for setups like yours. I have used a few in the past with good results. Im going off memory but I believe crane cams makes them.
It might work with the C4, especially if it is a 157 tooth size. Paul S is the transmission guru here ... he ought to be able to tell you.
