helping a friend rebuild his 84 302 ... the connecting rods have no pins they look like the rods are pressed to the wrist pin ... not like my 79 at all . any help in the matter would be awesome.
In a press at the machine shop! you can't do this without the proper holding fixture or you will damage the piston and rod.
thanks guys thats what I was thinking but he was not so sure ... I would guess the machine shop will press the new pistons to the rods at the same time ?
the machine shop will install the new pistons on the rods, they don't press them on, the rods are heated to a certain temp, then the pins are slid through, and in a few seconds when the rods cool, they are there to stay.
Some do press the pins in the rods. Some heat the rod ends, which is not really a good thing to do with metal parts if they're not cooled properly.
i would suggest they...resize the rods...at the same time... ...and where are you located in Ga? MMB's Locational Poll ...Frank...:Handshake
A good machine shop will automatically check length, size and straightness before pressing pistons. Its the only way to guarantee their work.
For what it cost to rework stock rods and add ARP bolts you can buy aftermarket rods that are stronger.
