    Can the Comet hold off the Malibu this summer? Could be an interesting match up. Here's the specs;
    '72 Comet;
    302
    B303 roller
    stock E7 heads
    c4 w/shift kit, stock converter
    Weiand 8011(basically their version of a Performer)
    Holley 600
    stock manifolds w/ 2" duals
    It will get a 3.55 gear for this, after all it's giving up 153 cubes.
    '78 Malibu;
    455 Olds
    totally stock mid '70s smog motor save for a 700 Holley dp
    400 turbo-stock
    stock manifolds w/2.25" duals
    2.73 rear
    I'm thinking the Malibu is gonna put about 2-3 tenths on the Comet....if it'll hook. Best the Comet ran was 9.90(1/8) w/the stock 2.79 gear(lack of a stall converter kills it the first 60' or so). I figure the 3.55s should knock it down to the .60s-.70s. The old '78 Delta 88 I had ran 9.60 w/ a junk 455, shift-kitted 350 turbo and 2.41 gears. The Malibu is lighter and has a little more gear(and the motor's in much better shape). If it hooked hard I figure low 9s, but(lack of) traction and the heavier 400 turbo will probably keep it pretty close to the Comet. How do YOU think it'll turn out??:huh:

    I figure the malibu will win

    not really it hard to make up for 150 cubic inches. I figure with gears and sticky tires on the comet the outcome might be different

    I figure after 2 passes the Malibu will break the 7.5 rear end. My buddys El camino with a mild 350 (car ran 15.80) would break them regularlly.

    OK.........hold on a min.........78 Olds with a stock 455 from the 70's in it? We need to talk. Tim........I do not know you or your background, age, or anything else for that matter. ( You may be 10X smarter tham me......not a far goal according to some). But, is this a car you actually know the background of? Is this a co-worker who wants to race? Give the details..........I am sure MANY of the seasoned street racers will respond. BS'ing about one's car is universal and non-ending. PM me if you want my # and we can talk. If he is on the up and up, I think there may be a chance.

    It's my car. All I know about the motor/trans is they came out of a '70s 98 Regency w/ about 70k on it. The car was a v6 car. I haven't time to get it all lined out yet. Probably try & take 'em both to the local 1/8 mile this spring......IF I get both of 'em tuned up & ready.:rolleyes:

    OK .Tim....I thought from the original post, you meant it was the stock motor that came in the car. Just a misunderstanding. I knew they did not come stock in the 78' model. Sorry for the misunderstanding. When is the race?

    It usually only takes a 302 ford to beat most gm,s but i will give the olds some credit it may take a 351 to make your competitor cry.:cry:

    Lose the exhaust manifolds and slap on some long tube headers, put a Performer RPM intake and at least put the 355's or 370ish if you can. Mix in a splash of race gas, advance the timing and DRAGGG that malibu to the other end:yup::racingflag:
