The actual "switch" has a slotted base and connects to the lock cylinder with a rod. It probably just needs adjusting. I forget the procedure, but it involves putting the key in a certain position, loosening the switch and using a 1/8" drill bit through a pilot hole in the switch to align it...

The key tumbler actuates a rod that goes to a slide switch mounted a few inches down the steering column. If you drop the steering wheel a few inches by loosening the three nuts that hold it to the dash you can reach the switch. As mentioned, it has slotted mounting holes and can be adjusted. BTW, if you ever have to replace the slide switch in a 70 they're almost impossible to find and are very expensive. They were a one-year only deal, same switch as 1970 Mustangs and Cougers use. Before 1970 Mavs used a dash mounted switch, after 1970 Ford change the pigtail connector.

ok guys i just got out there and got the column pulled down and i loosened the nuts holding the switch secure to the column and i unhooked the rod from the switch to see if the key switch would move freely and is was still the same as before so does this mean the key switch is bad??? i wouldnt think the ignition switch would be bad if this was occurring ,pleaase let me know what u guys think

If u unhooked the rod and key tumbler will still not turn, then i would say you need to replace the key tumbler. I had to replace mine. they are available at most auto parts. (couple of days to get it) good luck(y)

Unless the column thinks it is in park (auto) or reverse (3-speed manual)....the lock cylinder will not rotate.
