Not if you fan blows too much air across it that it cools off the heater core, preventing it from ever heating up.

It is a delicate balance. :D

As far as I know, most if not all heat control valves of the 70's and prior, were manual. Adjusting the temp control lever control water flow thus amount of heat produced. :hmmm:

Well,,, May as well add this, certain cars back in the era had trouble heating if hoses were hooked up backwards. Don`t think Maverick was one of them,,,

My car is a 74 with factory AC. My valve is vacuum operated. when I took it off I replaced it with a ball valve from Ace Hardware. I plugged both the vacuum hoses,it has two,and have actually just left the valve open. It makes no difference in how the AC works,so I`m not sure of why it`s even on the car. It is a mystery to me! The heat is regulated by a blend door in the heater box. Both heat and air work great with this valve totally open!

The lever controls the air mix door Bryant mentioned. In cars without a coolant control valve the heater core always has coolant flowing through it. All you do is control the airflow through the core.

Ok! Im really new to this type of vechicle - So I really can't challenge what Im hearing.
My question is w\ hot water in the core continously when you have AC running, an open the air door to the pass compartment u get hot-cold mix?
If the valve has no use why mfg's put them on?

Back in the day... AC wasnt as efficient as it is today. In order to allow the AC to work at its best cooling the passenger compartment. The flow of hot coolant through the heater core was stopped by the valve so hot air couldnt mix with the refrigerated air.

The valve is there so the a/c is is not working so hard to cool the cars interior. When the temp control on the dash is about 1/2 the valve begins to close and restrict flow. When at full cool the valve is fully closed so the a/c is not tring to cool the heat from the heater core just the incoming air from the cowl intake. This is the reason for the two vacuum lines to the valve as this is for the 3 stages. full open / 1/2 closed / fully closed.

    Hope this helps

This is great! I think my mystery has been solved. I`ll just open my valve for winter and close it for summer!

    Thanks everyone!:thumbs2:

P.S. I`d get an original valve if I could find one at a reasonable price.
