Cold engine, sat for how long, how did you crank engine?
How did engine run before you pulled out an why did you pull it out?

Make sure the throttle is wide open to do the test. Add a small amount,1oz,of engine oil to each cylinder and try it again. If the pressure increases a lot the rings have unseated or are worn. If your engine has sat a long time the compression will be somewhat lower than normal anyway, but What you have stated is Very low. Also does it turn over at the normal cranking speed. If not you may have internal rust damage to your engine. Good Luck in your diagnosis, you`ll get many more informative posts also!

P.S. Something I forgot to mention,is if your timing chain is worn and has skipped time, you will also get a low compression reading.

Did you turn over with starter or by hand?

i pulled it just to replace my steering box and i was going to paint the engine and i cleaned it up and had a head gasket leaking oil not much at all but buddy told me to just replace it and while i have it out replace the timing chain to a double roller and re seal and by doing that everything should be resealed. yea i figure just something wasnt right with that reading

you are not turning the motor over fast enough and when you do a test by kicking it over with the starter you let it kick about 5 times

it may work with a air impact gun to get it to kick over faster ???

From what you have said, very little oil leak, I dont think I would change head gasket. May be asking for more problems. How much an is it fresh oil leaking? May be from elsewhere too.

just a reminder you MUST clean the head's and the block VERY VERY VERY GOOD i messed up and did not clean the block as good and i had a good water leak my D-side exhaust looked like a jet-ski

so take a few razor blades to it

on my 72 mav i was the first person to take the heads off

so it wouldn't even look like it had some gasket left on the block then i would take the razor and go a diff direction with it and some gasket would come up
