I just bought a 71 thats 500 miles away and sits on 40 year old tires. Well if I want to drive it home I will have to get new tires and I wonder want is the largest I can put on stock rims? Stock was 6.45/14 or 175/75/14. Can I go to a 205 on these rims. Thanks Rick

absolutly 195 65 r14 would be whitin 1.5% of the original diameter (so no trouble for the speedo) http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp?action=submit&reset=yes i use this to calculate tire size it's easy and gives a good idea of what is avalable for the choosen size
I understand 195's would be about the limit in the front with turning and the sidewall stress but do you think I could go with 205's on the rear ? These are stock 71 14 inch rims that I'm talking about . Has anyone ever put 205's on there stock rims ? Thanks Rick
I have 215/70*14 rear on my car w/ Mag500 7 in. rims, no problem. I wud think that 205's shud work fine. I have 195s on the front cuz 205's rubbed the well - I had them taken off b4 I left the tire shop and went 195's. I need frt springs; they are not real bad but Im sure if I had new springs I cud have kept the 205's. I wud'nt worry much abt my speedo reading cuz my GPS and speedo the same reading. The 195's are probably the narrowest I wud put on those 7 in. rims. Gud Luk.
Thanks for posting that info. mojo. I am ordering new tires for my Maverick this week. I was thinking those sizes were what I was after as well. My wheels are 68 Mustang ssw.
RickM, If the car has stock 4.5 inch wide wheels ... 195s are going to be the upper limit ... if you have 6 inch rims, you can go for more, but if you have those super-skinny rims, you really have to squash a tire to get them on there. I tried 205/70/14s on my first Comet on the skinny rims and they were donuts ... completely rounded.... did not fit.
...500 miles... are the tires the only things that are..."40 yrs. old"... ...belts, hoses, fuel lines...etc...etc...
yeah ... I think I would have spares for everything, and fluids, too. Be especially concious of the brakes. I had a trip like that ... brakes felt a bit soft while on the interstate ... decided to get off at the next exit to check them ... pedal went to the floor on the off ramp ... about three pumps and it was back up. ... barely stopped the car ... pint of brake fluid lasted the rest of the trip. Then I was in a little town at midnight, where they roll the streets up at 9 PM, trying to score 3 quarts of oil ... leaky rear main ... spewing 1 quart every 100 miles ... clattering lifters ... massive chassis clean-up ... good times ... Travel during daylight or at least where there is 24 hour everything ...
I'm asking about tires for when it gets here. A carrier is picking up. Hope to see it in a week or so.
