I dropped the gas tank out from under the 72 yesterday. The outside looks good but the inside is full of metal grit. I'm wondering if there are new replacement tanks available, could go used, or if I swap the straight six for an eight building a street rod should I look at a fuel cell.

New tanks are available.Usually on e-vil bay Search out tank info. there are several forums on installing tanks into your mav.either mustang tanks or mav. weather its a six or v8 doesn,t matter about the tank.

This tech article is one of the best ...

The Mustang tank swap shown in there places the new tank centered instead of offset. That makes it easier to run dual exhausts.

If you time it right, CJs Pony Parts can get you into a new tank with all the accessories (float, sending unit, etc) for right around $100 on sale.

if your tank is not real bad,you can buy a tank restoration kit.. clean it real well then coat it with the sealer.. In mine, every time I touched it more rust came loose,so I used a 69 mustang tank...

With regard to my tank, I am thinking that by the time I pay some radiator shop to boil it out and then buy a resto kit, plus a new sock for the float, etc ... the money is about the same for a new tank kit.

Then it comes down to if I want to go through modding the car ... still a toss-up ...

    Dave,

I thought there was some issue with the later tank interfering with the early rear valance panel.... :hmmm:

rock auto also has these fuel tanks. as stated before, the later years tanks not fitting early years is inaccurate. mine fit beautifully.

The mav is gone but i'm still here!

X's 2! i don't know who said that they didn't fit. My 71 valence has plenty of room between the 76 tank :)

Very cool to hear this about the later tanks :thumbs2: Yet another option, should I need it. I have dual exhaust, but they run outboard of the frame rails, so a stock tank isn't really an issue with my car.

Jason ... good to see you! Hope all is well. We missed you and the girls at Silver Springs. You could have come out there and froze with the rest of us.
