ok so the new tranny is in. We finally thought we finished and went to start the car for the first time. the second the car turns over its an aweful grinding sound. it sounds like when you start your car and you leave it in the start position when the motor runs. when you look at the pic i've attached you can tell something happened to my starter. (we took it off when we swapped trannys) now does anybody have any idea what coulda caused that. my dad said he thinks it might not have been seated all the way and so it tore it up. but i just want to see if anybody else has any idea's before we toss in another starter. and the motor turns over by hand just fine. Look closely at the pic and you'll notice a ring missing. What could have caused it? We're getting a new starter today. Check the teeth on the flywheel also. I had one that stayed engaged with the car running. Cratered the starter The internals just poured out when we opened it up.
ok thats sorta what where thinking. its staying engaged. cause when they get power, the shaft comes out to turn the flywheel? oh and the fly wheel looked fine. the teeth on the starter looked a little questionable on the ends i'm new to this topic of starters as you can tell
Be certain you have full battery voltage to the starter. Lack of proper voltage/amperage can cause starter to lag.Sounds like the gear hung up on the shaft of your starter causing it to remain engaged with the ring gear.Possible causes: Loose mounting bolts,wrong starter for app,Wrong tooth count flex plate for bell housing(or the opposite)bad gear teeth on flex.Just plain old worn out starter.Lack of a motor plate between bell and engine(you do have the plate in place right???) That washer on the stater shaft is an override clip...It keeps the gear from banging into the tail housing of the starter and chewing it up.It should look like it does, as for the chamfer(green arrow) the part is cast that way,not a problem.Good luck man, you'll get it sorted out!
Just bench test the starter. Clamp starter in vice,using battery cables, touch positive cable from batt to terminal on starter. see if drive woks rite.
if flywheel appears bent make sure there isn't a drain plug on torque converter. some flywheels only have one hole for it to line up with. good luck!
i will check into that guys :Handshake we put some washers for a temporary shim so we could diagnose the problem and the shims solved it. so that means the starter is retracting (we watched it) and the flywheel is bent causing it to touch the flywheel when it shouldn't good thing is that we got the starter fixed up for $15
Matt, I hope this is a quick fix, I am getting grayer hair just talking to your dad. I didn't sweat this bad when my kids were born - I want you have that yellow C4 burning up the road - not collecting dust. You and your dad have learned a lot with this installation - I just want to see the results!
