I was wondering how to tell if you have a bad driveshaft? A week ago I shifted out of 1st too 2ed and it slamed hard. The trans is a c4 full race trans from performace auto matic. I have noticed a odd vibration in the car but i had to drive it home and it did not feel that bad but it has slowly gotten worse. It is hard to hear specific because i have a gear drive. its like a low growl and where from the back of the trans to the rear diff. i do not know what the hell it is but everthing else is really new except the drive shaft for a v6 ( i know i should upgraded it either way). Oddly enought i just threw on a new carb and the car feels like its slipping but the rpms dont seem to have risin when slips. Thank you for the help.

Did you change the rear u joint? I dont know why but when you buy a u joint for a Maverick they give you a 1310 ujoint which has 1/16" caps on all 4 corners when in actuallity it needs 2 - 1 1/16" caps on driveline and 2 1 1/8 caps on the rearend yoke ears. Some people just buy 2 ujoints and take the caps off of the ujoint with 1 1/8 caps and put on the 1310 ujoint . There is a correct ujoint to replace it with and is called a 1310 special. Sorry I cant give you the correct number at the moment.

Hope fully that is your problem, other than taking your driveline to a shop and having them check it is the only way I know for sure

I appreciate the site but im not sure its even the drive shaft just and odd groaning noise that resonates throught the car. i know its not motor related im hopeing it not the race trans with 2k on it. what is a good replcement shaft? Can a stock 72 6cylnder drive shaft handle a v8 slightly moded?

A bad U joint or driveshaft that's out of balance, or out of round will show itself in a high pitched vibration, approximately three times the frequency of a wheel balance vibe. It normally doesn't make noise, just a vibe you can feel thru the floors. At anyrate, a new shaft is as easy as buying one for a Foxbody Stang, it's the same length for both cars.

I would consider testing the converter. If it is / was a stock converter or a poorly built performance converter the fins may have laid over or The stator clutch may have failed on your hard shift to second gear. Check out all the easy things first and if everything checks OK then have the converter checked.

Did the box it came in say it was GOOD?
    Have it checked.
PA has had problems like anyone in this business.
The companies that stand out are the ones who will admit the mistake and make it right.

i bought it throught summit. All new parts. no problems for the 4 months or so that i randomly drove it. Shifted from 1st to 2ed around 6k big kick. now when coming down in speed without breaking a huming noise and slight vibration. too bad i have a gear drive it is hard to hear exactly where the noise is.

Get the rear of the car up on jackstands, start it up, put it in gear and watch the driveshaft as it turns. If it's something obvious, you'll see it.

I fought this same issue for over a year. Worked out all the angles on the engine, new converter, then the driveshaft (straightened and balanced), then the rearend, and finally pinion angle. And all the time it was u-joint. I never noticed that the joint had 2 different sized caps, and it had just walked around a bit inside the cap-holder.

Yours may not be that issue, but I would definitely double check before sinking a bunch of money into all the other things it could be. That u-joint should fit TIGHT in the holder, and there should be NO play or movement (this is before you bolt it down).
