i was wondering what is wrong with my gas gauge. I dont know if it is a bad ground or if the sending unit in the tank is bad. I have a 74 maverick 302 v8. thank you

take the sending unit out of the tank and inspect it and you can flush the tank at the same time ?

in my 72 it was under the car Driver side on the gas tank just a twist and it pop's out then spills gas everywhere so have something to catch it in :rofl2:or just take the hose off before and drain it

First thing you need to due is to check gauge and wiring ..

to due this unplug plug at sending unit take a small jumper wire ( with key in the on position ) jump across the two wires in the plug at sending unit IF the gauge goes to full the wiring and gauge and cvr (cluster voltage regulator ) is OK your sending is bad .. maybe just a bad float ..

If you do pull the sender, drain as much gas as you can, you'll be amazed how much gas will come pouring out. Plus, it's GAS expensive and highly flammable!

Is the gauge completely non-functioning, or just wildly inaccurate? It might just be the voltage regulator in your instrument cluster.

Bump for Justice, I have the same issue with mine. If it is the regulator in the dash, can it be repaired, or do I have to just replace it?

If it's stuck on empty, pull the plug at the sending unit on the tank and jump the two sockets as suggested. If it goes to full with the ignition key in the run position, the sending unit is bad. I just replaced mine on my 74 with one from AutoKrafters. It's stainless steel, so rust will not be a problem. About $80. I bought mine off of eBay from them with free shipping. An electric fuel pump will empty the tank, but still be prepared in case it doesn't. And use the new "O" ring or it will leak! Don't ask me how I know!

I just had the same deal and I pulled the sending unit and the float was full of gas. New float coming today. Oh when you have the unit out hook up all your wires and move the float arm by hand to see if the unit is working.
