Rebuilding my C4 tranny this weekend, wish me luck! Any advice anyone? Like how to check the input shaft end play without the gauge?
Peter, You need the rebuild kit plus: The front band (if it doesn't come in the kit) green strip modulator #9 (case to reverse drum) thrust washer as for advice there are two seals (an O-ring and a quad ring) to seal the kick-down lever - use the quad ring because it seals better longer. Lubricate all seals and o-rings that rotate or have rotating parts going through them with vaseline. Test the clutch and band functions with air (40 - 50 psi) to make sure they work Remove each valve in the valve body, case and governor and polish them with 600 grit emery paper (lube with vaseline when you install them Take your time and double check as you go.
I would send that valve body back for a refund and spend my money with Jay at broader performace. He doesn't have the problems that TCI has had lately.
OK, I have learned alot. especially about transtar and their products. 1 they don't come with a packing list, or any kind of parts list apparently. So, if your a noob you have a box full of parts and you aren't really sure what is what. 2 the instructions are iffy at best. They seem complete initially, but when it comes to rebuilding the sub assemblies, well, they don't tell you that you need to go to section so an so... so, it is pretty much hunting through the non-searchable pdf endlessly hoping you aren't missing anything. 3 as you are reading and looking at the illustrations you realize that they don't always match! All that said, it really isn't that hard, just take it one piece at a time.
After the rebuild it ran for about 15 minutes and then went clunk and lost forward gears. I am thinking of selling it.
