mr. sam, i'm just learning. and trying to catch up to the pro's. i'll definitely do the research on bolts. this little project is holding me up. thanks for the help though.

so you have updated pics on your site. i'll check them out. how are you coming with your restorations? what was the hardest project to fix on the mav?
Attention I do get everyday, I'm outside working on the car. somebody wants to buy it, and shocked that I actually know how to fix it. I'm like no way, on selling it. Are you trying to put yours in a show?

is it a header or an exhast manifold. a header is made with tubes welded togther. a manifold is a cast iron manifold.

Don't make the mistake of breaking an EasyOut off in the bolt. A guy I worked with had a 4 cyl Willys with a 4 cyl and a blown head gasket. His wife got tired of waiting for him to fix it and decided to do it herself. Broke a head bolt off in the block. Drilled it out and tried extracting it with an EasyOut. Broke the EasyOut off and had no means to remove that. They're very hard and cannot be drilled out with an ordinary bit.

He gave the Willys to me and I fixed it. :) Put a 394 Olds with two four barrel carbs, cam and home made headers. But, that's another story.

Just wanted to warn you about broken EasyOuts. They're a bigger problem.

that was a funny story and sounds like something i would do trying to be mrs. independent. haha. I havent attempted to fix it yet. resting from getting beat up the first time. i was going to try and drill it out because i dont think there is a piece sticking out that i can weld another nut to. what drill bit do you recommend since you definitely are an expert on this subject being you resolved the problem before. Oh, and what is an easyout. I guess i should not use that, right?:):tiphat:

You're MUCH too kind. :hmmm: Hardly an expert. I resolved it by replacing the engine.

I think you're going to need some help with this one. I admire your courage but think you're headed for trouble. Either find a friend who knows how to do it or take it to a machine shop and let them get the broken bolt out. Sorry to discourage you but I expect if you try it you'll end up in the same place my friend's wife did but with a broken drill bit rather than an EasyOut. Just as bad.

unfortunately i dont know any handy male friends. i know more than they do. I wanted to take it to a shop, but I cant drive it over there, of course. I had a mechanic come out to me, but he was acting lazy and just kept giving me other numbers of other people to call. I've replaced the carb, battery, altenator, starter, spark plugs, wire, and fuel line. I think I might as well try and tackle this job as well. If I can do that, hopefully with prayer, I can do this. haha... Replace the engine. Seems like an expert to me...Maybe I'll try a small bit.

this is true but...you can take a...center punch...and tap it with a hammer and it will crack into little pieces and then removed. EasyOuts are hard but brittle...:yup:

...the center punch is to remove a broken off...Easy Out.
an...Easy Out...is used to remove broken bolts. you drill a hole in the bolt and then put the Easy Out in the hole and turn it counterclockwise to remove the bolt. sometimes they will break and need to be removed from the hole you drilled.

Good info. :tiphat: Will it work for a drill bit too? Good chance a broken bit will have to be removed.
