So...the car gives me allot of trouble starting as if there is not enough fuel getting there. It will start and then cut off right away and it runs a little longer each time.

Now...the major problem is that I am getting oil and/or fuel on the threads of some spark plugs...mainly just one of them.

Would replacing or rebuilding the carb solve both of these issues? I have a 250 that doesnt have alot of miles on it but sat for a while. I dont think the oil is from bad rings...I have no smoke coming out of the exhaust. could the valve seals be bad from sitting a while?

any parts store should have them,

also do a compression test on it.

Oil on the threads of the plugs? Not oil on the electrode?? Oil on the outside(threads) of the plug indicates an oil leak (valve cover gasket)Oil on the electrodes would indicate an oil consumption problem.Does it puff blue smoke on start up??? This would indicate valve seals/guides are bad. As for the carb problem...Fuel soaked plugs dont like to fire. You indicate that it appears to be a problem with one cyl??? You may have a valve stuck open in this one bore...This will make the engine hard to start and can also be a source for your oil on the plug (dripping down the stem of the stuck valve into the chamber and getting on the plug. Did you recently rev the wee out of the engine??? and have had trouble ever since???

Should I fix the carb problem before conducting a compression test?
And what machinery is required in a compression test...not much money in the bank...should I take it to a shop for that?

Yes, only cuts out at idle when it is first started up...I have to give it the right amount of gas when I first start it and sometimes it cuts out anyway and once I let my foot out of the gas it will definately cut out. I have messed with the carb adjustments to see if that would help, to no avail. After a little bit, its fine. maybe a choke issue?

I will try to post a picture tomorrow. I dont think its on the electrode. I don't see a puff of smoke when I start it or drive it, maybe I should have someone look at it while I start it to help me out. I have not revved it out of character, so if I do have a stuck valve, its not from that!! haha

You might look at adjusting the choke - it sounds yo me like the choke is not closing enough to richen the mixture on cold starts.
