im getting ready to buy a junkyard c4 and get a buddy to rebuild it for me with a full manual valve body and im going to need a floor shifter. id like to get the tci outlaw shifter since ill have a tci converter and tci valve body just to say all my trans parts are tci but i dont get the gate shifters and someone explain or so a vid of how to? ive seen the b&m ratchet shifters and they are cool just wondering what you all are running with??
I had a vertical-gated, ratchet ("slap stick") shifter in my '73 Z28 in high school and had a blast with it. (I think it was a B&M.) I'm sure different ones work differently, but here's how mine worked (on a regular TH-350, 3-speed tranny)... These are the "gates"... In Park, the shifter is "locked" in position and cannot be moved back and forth To get into Reverse, you have to physically pull UP on the (spring-loaded) shift handle, pull it back, and let it go to drop it 'down' into Reverse To get from Reverse to Drive, you pull it up, back, and drop it down again These "vertical gates" physically prevent you from accidentally shifting into ANY gear These are the "ratchets"... To get from Drive to 2, you pull back on the shifter one time To get from 2 to 1, you pull back on the shifter again Now you're ready to go... Punch the throttle and at your shift point you "slap" the shift handle forward. This ratchets you from 1st to 2nd At the next shift point, you "slap" the shift handle forward again. This ratchets you from 2nd to 3rd (drive). I really enjoyed it and with a little creative throttle work, it was pretty easy to make the car sound like a manual tranny
Hurst Pro Matic 2. Its the shifter that was in my first Mav build from high school in the 80's. Its now in my current car and works perfect. For some reason I saved it all these years. Its simple in how it works and stands up very well. Not many moving parts to wear out. Very easy install. We did it over my lunch at work.
Hurst V Matic. Got it off eBay for $35. Works same as B&M , Trigger reverse lockout, gate or ratchet shift.
well i think ive narrowed it to these two tci outlaw shifter- its a gate which from what i can understand means that to from 1st to 2nd you just slam it forward and then press the handle trigger and foward into 3rd then i guess have to press the trigger again to go into neutral? and there theres a lock out for R and Park http://www.summitracing.com/parts/TCI-616332/ b&m pro ratchet shifter and i get how this works just bang it forward and and back http://www.summitracing.com/parts/BMM-80842/
I thought gate shifters were the ones that actually have a gate face on them? Like this: --------------------------------------------------- I like the first one you posted the best! i'm cheap thought so i got a z Gate!
