Planning for paint and need a little help. I have had cars painted before but not to this level before. I want the next paint job to last 25+ years. Looking for a show quality paint job and plan to do alot of the prep work. I want every spot repainted - am I missing anything I need to consider? To Do: Undercoat - before paint Remove all rubber and replace with new after paint job Lights, Bumpers, Locks, Handles removed and stored Engine well - Can this be painted with engine in place? (Black) Fenders - I want the fenders patined off the car for clean paint lines. (Blue) Valances - Painted off car Trunk - Paint off car Trunk Jam - Prep like body Doors - Paint off car? Door Jams - remove hinges and prep like the body (Covering original paint here) Interior - Can I leave that in the car? Rear windows - Do you need to remove those for a quality job? Boomerang - Remove and paint off car Can the door jams be painted with custom rattle cans and look as good as the paint booth or should I just have the body shop do those as well? Any suggestions or threads that I should read?
Id suggest for best results take anything that will unbolt off of the car do it. When i do an overall i paint all the jams with all the panels off of the car, give it a day or two then reassemble the panels back tape your jams then spray the outside. Is the color your painting a metallic? If so it can be difficult to paint each panel and get it to match. Metallic can lay different and the color will look off when next to another panel. Prep work is the key, clean clean clean. Anybody can learn to lay down color the nice jobs are all in the prep and finish.
I would suggest: - Undercoating AFTER painting. - You COULD paint it with the engine still in the car, but would look best if removed (and easier in my opinion) - Have the paint shop do all the jambs. - Remove interior - Remove all windows
And if you're looking for a show car paint job and want 25 years out of it I wouldn't suggest rattle canning anything.
Yup! And yup again. To get the best paint job, you'll need to dissemble the entire car. But do any work that needs to be done before you take it apart, so you can get the proper fitment, before paint.
Getting all spots that need attention filled or repaired with metal now. Will be sprayed with POR-15, epoxy primer and then flat black. (Not rattle can) To strip the car - I would like to leave the suspension and drive train in the car - minus the engine and parts. Do I need to take the entire wiring out of the car or just firewall forward? For taking the interior out - Carpet, rubber, glass, seats, plastic panels, headliner and leave the dash, shifter and steering column in? The colors will be 1970 Mustang Poly Dark Blue and black. No metallic colors. Need to locate a Brazilian stripe kit.
You dont need to pull the headliner unless it needs replacing. My car spent 11 months at work in our body shop and I got one hell of a lesson in body and paint. You cant get what your expecting without complete disassemble and strip of components. It takes a lot of planning and organizing. Also takes a lot of time and money as well. My car would have run 8 grand plus at shop rate and its still not what I call show quality. Would still need a wet sand and polish. My car was painted as a shell and all the parts painted off the car then re-assembled. It makes for a real clean look when done but it comes with risk. I had all the body shop to help with putting panels back on without damage. Never mind damage you can do on re-assembly but painting the parts seperate is a bit risky. Everything the painter does has to be the same as when he did the previous parts or the color could be off. Mine being a solid color is a bit more forgiving. If your doing anything other than a solid color I would really think about doing the panels on the car with the outer shell. Your painter will guide you through the process I'm sure and let you know the best way to organize your project. Biggest single piece of advice I can give you is, The paint is only as good as the prep work. If I did another car I would do the panels on the car after assembly. Its too nerve racking putting painted parts back on. They had to kick me out of the shop I was making them nervous.
