a 9 inch big spline diff from a 1958 ranch-wagon and hasn't been used in decades. it will need a total going through. how do i do this? how do i turn it into a true-track? how do i get break parts? what do i need to watch for? all you smarter than me, Help!!
what condition is the out side in? pics? i would clean the out side of it before opening it. got to self wash place that has the high pressure sprayers. soak housing with engine degreaser if its really bad. once you get it clean, set it up on two jack stands. take off the drums, there is a hole in the axle flange that will line up with the 4 nuts that hold in the axles. take off those nuts. chances are the axles wont just pull out but see if they will. if they dont, take the drum and put it back on the axle backwards. put 3 to 5 lugnuts on about 5 threads. now use the drum like a slide hammer by jerking it out against the axles. if this doesnt work then let me know and ill tell you more ways to try to get them out. with the axles out inspect the axle bearings. they should turn smoothly with no roughness. count the splines on the end of a axle. put a drain pan under the center section of the diff. now the thirdmember has nuts holding it in. remove them. there may be copper washers under the nuts. you will need to remove them. i usually use a chissel to split them or lift them off. now the third member will pull out, you may need to hit the side of the yoke with a mallot to brake seal. take some pics of the third member and post them. pull the 5 bolts out of the front of the pinion support and pull it out. count how many teeth are on the pinion and on the ring gear. divide the ring gear number by the pinion number and that is your gear ratio. turn the pinion in its support. does it turn smoothly or rough. if smooth the bearings are ok, if rough they need replacement. i can identify if you have a limited slip of some type if you post pics. do all this and get the pics and info togther and i can advise you on what to do next.
Thank You Both... As a new member I want to thank both of you guys. Its questions like this from ptpdub, and then help from members like Bryant that make this the best forum on the web....Thanks again!
x2!! I have a new Trac Lok to install in my 8". Need to pull the center section and take it somewhere to get the Track Lok installed. I expect most of what Bryan has posted will apply to my 8". Thanks.
could you take a picture of your trac lok and show me what it looks like? i have never had a diff apart and i would love to see one.
