This topic has been covered before, but it seems that Ford covered it:

    FORD TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN
    BULLETIN NUMBER 104
    MARCH 5, 1976
    Under Maverick/Comet it has listed:
1975-76 Slow Fuel Tank Fill and/or Fuel Spitback at the Fuel Tank Filler Pipe

Does anybody have this bulletin? It would be nice to see how Ford suggested fixing this.

One could buy the bulletin here:

I Googled it and it says it's covered in an "article 1355" which is a replacement fuel filler neck. God knows what part # it is,cause that was all I could find. I'm sure there are a lot of these on cars in junkyards. Mine does this too,and I've just gotten used to it being slow. Mines a 74,though,so I don't even know if the newer pipe would fit my car.

Is that the neck with the flapper maybe?

Funny how that bulletin only goes to 1976. My '77 Maverick always blows back fuel if I fill it up too fast or too full. Apparently whatever the problem was it continued for one more year. I too would like to know how FORD went about fixing this problem.

I think that the main problem now is that newer gas pumps run a lot faster than the ones in the 70s. I have only been able to use them at about half-speed.

I would like to find a fix, if you guys find one.

    It is annoying...and embarrassing.

My filler tube is empty -- no vent tube and no unleaded fuel restriction -- and it doesn't splash back. But, I don't run the pump full speed. Always run it at about .1 gal/sec on any car. Works for me.

Yeah, but who wants to spend half an hour at the pump, unless there is a cute chick at the pump next to you...

I used to keep the key ON an watch the fuel gauge through the back window, but the new tachometer is in the way. Now, I just pump until it clicks, or most likely, splashes back, then feed it slow until I see it gurgling just at the turn down.

.1 gal/sec = 6 gal/min. Gives you time to check out who else is pumping. :D

In B.C I have never had a problem...but everytime I go south of the border..tidal wave! I can only put fuel in by barely squeezin' and even then it will click off a few times. Your pumps are waaay faster..

Turn the nozzle to about 8 o'clock, and the issue goes away.
