I just bought a maverick with a 250 six and when ever i put it into reverse or drive it jumps and then dies i checked the vacuum lines there all fine and when i jack the rear up the car runs and shifts fine.

Any idea on where i should start look for the problem.

It sounds like your carb adjustments are off. If you can put it in gear and give it some gas will it keep running? Use your left foot to hold the brake and right to give it gas and see what happens. If it stays running adjust your curb idle on the carb and that should take care of it.

The curb idle should be about 600 rpm.
    Idle is about 600 rpm

    Hope this helps

It will stay running if i two foot it but playing with idle doesnt help. Ive tried that. Ive had the idle cranked up and had it real low.

Have you rebuilt the carb yet? I would rebuild it and clean the parts with a good parts clean solvent.

i may try screwing the mixture screw in all the way. make sure to count the turns. then screw it back out. kinda crunch up what may be at the bottom... also, after that, open the screw more. the idle should go up. slow the idle down a bit with the idle screw on the throttle. trial and error to see if you can get it to run ok. better than plunking down 100 or so bucks on a new carb.. of course if tinkering won't work... buy the carb. the only thing about tinkering with the carb... remember what you did so you can un-do it. :smash:

I hate to sound stupid, but, it is natural...

How do you know which adjustment is which screw on a Carb?

There are 3 or 4 adjusters and I never know which is which?

Looking at the carb from the drivers side. The left screw is the idle the right one next to it is the curb idle. On the other side of the carb you will see a screw going into the base of the carb. That is your mixture screw making it rich or lean. If I remember right turn the screw all the way in and than back it out 5 complete turns and that should be close for your mixture. I hope this helps.

sorry i thought you just checked the lines. ive heard of people going through hell replacing parts when it was that darn modulator thing. what controls how high the drive and reverse idles are? ? i know its not fast idle or regular idle. or even the mixtures. is the modulator adjustable? i asked our mechanic here and he said replace that thing just to be sure. this is important to know! mike

Yeah i know what it does.. and how it works... I have a fair knowledge of cars. I think its the carb just needs a rebuild but seeing as this is not my daily drive i just plan to make it move and sell it i only paid a $30 tow truck fee for the car.
