Well I know a 331 or a 347 id love to put in a 347 but the way it might. Be looking is its over bored and stroked. Beyond a 347.... like 60 over and all
Both the 331 and the 347's are overbored (.030) too. I would still go check that motor out, it never hurts to do that. You never know what might be there that you could be missing out on. "mystery" motors sometimes give a pleasant surprise to me. Went to check out a 64 Ford pickup one night that happened to be hiding a dual 4 carbed 428 under the hood. I also ended up with both a 427 and a 428 (in separate deals) this way.
Yea ill deffently go check it out soon and see what I can find about it I mean I still need to get ahold of the guy who had it before to see if he can come up with the bore and stroke numbers or just what parts
Definitely check it out, you never know what you'll find. I'm betting the guy that has it now misunderstood what he was told or was sold a bill of goods when he got the engine. Too many people that want to be car guys and know just enough to be dangerous. They are everywhere!
Yea that's what I thought too I figured ill look at it. See what the firing order its wired on and. Then give him two offers one if I can't. Get it started and 100 bucks more ( from the not running price) for it running. And just what happens from there I have a guy coming to pick up my t10 today so will have the extra dough just incase its a paper weight. Thanks guys Oh one more question what stamping should I look for to see if the block is a 302 or351?
The casting numbers for the block are by the starter. Roller 302's can be on either side at the very rear. Head numbers are under the intake runners, but the 86=on stock heads have ID numbers on the outside, at the front passenger side next to the valve cover (and on the rear corner of the drivers side) "S" is E6SE head, "T" is E7TE, GT is GT40 (also has three vertical bars in the front of the head, GT40P has a "P" in the front corner with 4 bars on the end. (think I'm 99% sure on the GT40 heads)
Really ? What do you do about the mis-fit in the size of the oilpump drive ? :16suspect 302's have a 1/4" drive, 351's have a 5/16" drive. Old school upgrade ?
Guy isn't coming to pick up the t 10 till Thursday so hopefully will get over there to look at the engine this weekend
Good luck, man! That is how I scored my engine. Fresh 5.0 bored over .040, but could never get it to run. Backfired, etc. I got it for $200. Pulled the heads, and 3 silver piston tops!!! Never been fired upon! I knew right away that he was putting a 5.0 into a truck that used to have a 302, and was trying to run the spark plugs in the 302 firing order. So, for $200, I have the motor you read about in all my escapades, and I spin it to 7k rpms just for fun. There is no way in hell I could have built this engine on this kind of budget without lucking out and finding this score. So take a look and keep your mouth shut if you recognize something the owner isn't aware of!
That's what thinking more and more checkthe castings numbers and firing order and run with the lowests price he'll take
