there's rubber gaskets around every rod/mating surface on the transmission. if it's the shift rod theres a round rubber gasket that you'll need to replace. you should be able to preform this by removing the pan/ removing valve body and you should have plenty of room to work and replace the gasket.

It is a ford engineering defect. Somewhere on the web, I saw a fix, which required taking the shaft out, doing some grinding or cutting on it, and it will seat better.

You can do the gasket, but it won't be a 100% fix.

Anybody know of the fix I am talking about?

    Scooper,
That is a way to use the long shift rod on a C4 that needs the short rod. It is NEVER necessary to cut and grind shift levers if you have the right one.

    BusyB,
There is an o-ring that seals the kick-down lever to the manual (shift) lever and a seal that seals the manual lever to the case.
The o-ring is the usual suspect when there is a leak at this area of the C4. It can be replaced from the outside with the transmission in the car - there is no need to open the pan or remove the valve body to do it. If that doesn't fix your leak then you will have to remove the pan and valve body to remove the manual lever to replace the seal. It can be done with the transmission in the car.
Most shops will tell you they have to remove the transmission because it is a lot easier that way and the get paid for the removal and installation.

Paul, I figured you would chime in if it wasn't correct.

I know you have an automatic search-bot that points you to all threads transmission!!!

And I am glad for that! :Handshake

This is the second forum I look at when I login. I go to the transmission sub forum first. :)
I've seen the same article you showed and one of the trans builders there called the poster "a hack". I am willing to do whatever it takes to make it right but I try to use the right parts before cutting and grinding to fit and painting to match. I have cut and welded manual levers to make them work for customers going from column shifter to floor shifter even though I could have bought a used one.
We each have different ways of doing things to accomplish what we need.
