Ok, the Mav was under heavy construction but now it is time to start her up. I put the gas tank back on and hooked up the line to the the fuel pump, but not the return line, I just put a bucket underneath it. When trying to start it up though I cant seem to get any gas into the carb. Any suggestions as to what I should do next? Thanks

Put gas in the tank? :p j/k Check to make sure fuel is getting to the fuel pump by disconnecting the input line and seeing if fuel drains out. Can also put the output line in a coffee can and crank the motor. There is no return line, that is a vapor line for tank vapors so they get burned when the car is started.

I use a FRAM clear filter so I can also check the status of the Fuel coming from the tank ..

That method doesn't allow for any (necessary, I'd think) pressure to build up does it?

...Not a carbed guy, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Are you running mechanical or electric? Why do you have a return line on a carbed engine? If mechanical, they sometimes will have a hard time drawing fuel in a dry state. You can pour some gas straight down the carb and it will fire up for a second or so. The higher RPM will usually get the fuel flowing.

did you try switching the lines going to the pump?when i was trying to start mine up from a rebuild,i was going nuts, trying to figure out why i wasn't getting any gas.switched the lines, fed the carb with starting fluid,to keep it running, and within a matter of seconds the filter was full of gas,and running on it's own.might be worth a shot.good luck...chuck.

was your tank dry? You may need to put more gas in it to get the pick up in the tank to get into the gas. It will take more than a gallon for that to happen.

    IT'S ALIVE!!!!! IT'S ALIVE!!!!!!
I ended up unhooking the gas tank and running a hose down into a gas can. Then I dumped a bunch of gas right into the carb. I on accident poured WAY more gas then I planed on, but it didnt start on fire so its all good. It fired right up then! I havent heard my Mav in over a year, it sounds great! considering the last time it ran it had about 3' of exhaust pipe running out the engine.
Well thanks guys for the input, couldnt have done it without ya!

Yeah gas in the carb is the way to go, cause it re-establishes the vacuum that gets lost after running dry. I had a similar scare after I ran out of gas (on the way to a gas station no less lol) and thought I had trashed something cause it wouldnt start again.... then I remembered that I wasn't driving a crappy EFI Topaz anymore lol...
