Well the original dash in my Grabber cracked. Made it 40 years so I guess that's a good run. Noticed it this morning driving to a car show. Typical crack right down the center.
I hear dash board restorations in WA is cheaper than Just Dashes. I may just go with a plastic overlay for now. Car show season is here and supposedly it takes 2 months for the repair.
i had the same problem with my 76 maverick .. ordered a dash cover ... it fits right over the existing dash .. cant even tell its a replacement !! i ordered it from stockinteriors.com it was $69.95 plus shipping ...comes in all colors or yo can paint it yourself !!!
Check with your local upholstery shop. This pad was dry rotted and looked like a dogs chew toy. I've seen better dash in the junkyard. 3 days and $80 later it looked new.
NOS black dash pad closed at $500.00 on ebay a few months back... those NOS dash pads are few and far between... I wonder how close the aftermarkets recovering look to original dashes?
Hey Dan...I talked to Fred about a month ago about doing my black dashpad restoration for my 72 Grabber. Fred is now working on my seat covers...and I plan on having him do a full restoration of my dash after that... ...I am also NOT going with an NOS, or nice condition dash pad, either....as they will not hold up to the Arizona sun out here for very long...or the heat in the shade... ....I am also going to build install "Tweeter" frames into the left and right side of the dash pad...and counter-sink ScanSeek tweeters into the pad, with flush black covers, that follow the contour of the curved dash. I will be doing the tweeter/speaker portion of it. Fred does the foam, and the factory-correct vinyl grain for these pads. I will be sending him a donor dash pad with frame for mine. He also quoted me a drastically cheaper price than Dashboard Restorations in Washington. Dashboard Restorations quoted me an official price of $ 475.00, which includes boxes and stuff. Fred is a really busy guy...and does restorations for car enthusiasts all over the country...so you have to be patient with him. This car restoration stuff is teaching me alot of patience. Good luck with whatever you go with...you have done a SPECTACULAR JOB on your car Dan!!!...and your car has been one of the inspiration cars for my restoration.
Thanks ... appreciate the compliments ... I'll save the dash restoration for a winter project ... There is a seller on eBay who has the caps for $80 with free shipping so I just bought one. Spray some Satin Black SEM on it and I'll be good to go for the summer car season.
