I have a new 16 gallon fuel cell that I was going to use in my last circle track car. I sold the car and now want to use this same cell in my Maverick. It is a plastic Jaz cell that sits in a steel can and it will go through the floor somewhat like the original gas tank did in my 70. It has no sump built in either. The fuel outlet originally was located at the top of this cell with a pick up hose leading to the bottom and the car had a mechanical fuel pump (puller pump). I want to put the fitting in a new lower location since I'm using an electric pump (pusher pump) and it would then gravity feed the pump. I've seen outlet fittings and hoses at the rear face of some cells near the bottom edge of the can. I guess it is for when the engine is under accerlation that the gas will still go to the rear of the cell. I'm just not liking the fuel hose being seen when looking at the back of the car and I'm not drag racing the car anyway so would there be any concerns with putting this outlet and hose on the front face of the cell? Thanks
I`ve seen electric pumps mounted above fuel cells close to tank. I don`t think you`ll have problems using stock hole and mount pump near bottom or below tank. As with any of my cars I don`t go below 1/4 tank and think it`s a good idea here too. Syphon effect will keep pump wet, may need primed first time but I doubt it. Just my opinion,,,
I've been told in the past that the fuel pickup could stay at the top of the cell but I was talking to a guy at a car show on May 1 that had a 383 powered Duster with an electric fuel pump and pickup fitting mounted low and to the rear on the cell. It seemed to me to just be a better place to pick up the fuel with an electric pump. I asked him what about mounting it to the front of the cell he told me "that's the worst place you could mount it" without giving me any reason why. The scary part about his cell was it was mounted on the inside trunk floor with that low mounted fitting to the rear. All I could think of was "what if that fitting leaks?" I guess he would fill the trunk with gas. At least my pick up fitting would be under the car as my cell would be sticking through the floor.
I would put the fitting in the bottom of the tank and the pump as close to that level as possible for a good gravity feed..... If you want to put the fitting in the front of the tank you could use a bulkhead fitting and add a hard tube inside the tank pointed towards the back of the tank for better pickup on acceleration, or even put it to the center of the tank if you plan on doing some corner carving.....
