I am getting ready to purchase carpet for my 1970 Maverick. I have read somewhere on the site that the universal carpet kits available from many suppliers will not fit my 1970 model. Has anyone on the site experienced a problem when ordering carpet for an early model Maverick? Are there any known vendors that can supply carpet specific to the early models? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks - Mike
I have....sucks! The only carpets made for a Mav are for the later models. The 69.5/70 has a narrower tunnel, so carpets are baggy and have to be trimmed or cut to fit. Can be done, but you really need a big sewing machine to make it look right.
Pasted below is my entire email thread with a company at Automotivecarpet.com - according to the final results of my questions/answers, it appears that they do have a carpet cut just for the 69.5/70 Maverick - I never ordered one as I had many other things to buy first but will look into this company again when the time comes - send them an email and see if they continue to state they have a direct fit carpet Bob Hatcher Mr. Hatcher, this is a one piece molded kit. Also this is for the smaller hump per our research department. >That price sounds fine and 1 or 2 piece carpet will be fine. interested, i too am getting ready to buy a new carpet for my 69.5 and would like to know what info you guys find. Im looking to redo my car cheap (its a road warrior not a show car) so im hopin to find something halfway decent without spending a ton. this is what im looking at http://www.auto-interior.com/ford23.htm?gclid=CIP8koCD8KgCFYS8KgodiRUACw#Maverick (3rd one down) If its actually a molded 1 piece full carpet it looks like a decent deal. ill be ready to order in about a week and then ill go ahead and give em a call and find out the details.
I contacted automotivecarpet.com and found that they are a direct supplier for ACC carpet and have been for over 12 years. They looked up the part numbers for the 69/70 2dr model and found that they were the identical number found for the 71-73 version. The number was different for 74-77 when they changed from loop to cut pile. They do not make any carpet specific to the narrower tunnel on the 69 & 70 model. Will keep looking but I sense that some modification will be in my future!!
I guess automotivecarpet.com just told me what I wanted to hear in order to make a sale I'll remember that when the time comes to buy my carpet
Actually, I ordered the carpet yesterday from the link that you supplied; http://www.auto-interior.com/ford23.htm?gclid=CIP8koCD8KgCFYS8KgodiRUACw#Maverick I called the vendor and found that they also utilize ACC as their supplier like most others found on the internet. They have the best price ($127) for the carpet without mass backing. Shipping was very reasonable also. I need the carpet soon so I can get my car back together for some upcoming local shows. I plan to either add additional padding where needed or may spot weld some sheet metal panels on either side of the tunnel to make up the difference. After all of the research, I am pretty certain that nobody makes carpet specific for the 69.5 and 70 model. So, my next thread will be on how I made the carpet for the wider tunnel work on my 70. Thanks to everyone that responded with ideas! Mike
Just get some heavy jute pad from a carpet store and glue it to the tunnel on the front section to build it up. It's no big deal and it will look fine.
@Green70 - Sounds good. Im gonna pull the trigger and order from auto-interior.com early next week. Keep us informed on what you think of the carpet. Hopefully itll work great.
