Have a 250 engine and I'm about to replace all lifters, do I have to replace cam also ? I'm not a mechanic and don't want to get that dip. If I only replace the lifters would it be fine . The reason I'm replacing lifters is because one would make noise once in while and because the gasket between cylinder head and block was leaking . The cylinder head was redone and valve set. Machine shop said valve were redone but looked in pretty good shape. What do you all recommend.

If every thing else is okay I'd just replace the lifter. I've replaced a couple on the 302 before.:)

If you are replacing the Cam, you always replace the lifters, But if you are replacing the lifters you do not need to replace the cam.

While you have it apart take a good look at the bottom of all the lifters. They should be smooth and shiny.(Actually they are slightly concave/convex Can never remember which is which) If you have one that is scored at all, you will need to replace the cam. A worn cam will chew up lifters and a worn lifter will chew up a cam lobe. So if you are replacing lifters because you have worn the bottom of one, you will need to replace the cam, but if they are all smooth on the bottom, just a set of new lifters should do nicely.

I'm thinking the same thing. But that's just me, if you're not into a total ground up resto on this car, just replacing the lifters should be fine if there is no lobe dammage. IMHO

New lifters-old cam = OK. Old lifters-new cam = NOT OK.
