filled up the car with water... still leaking out of the same bolt hole... anyone got an idea why? someone told me to just put rtv on the bolt and put it back in but that just seems like a temporary bandaid for another problem... help
If I remember right that does go into the water jacket. Permatex makes a material that you can get that is a thread seal. You should be able to get it at your local AutoZone or O'Reilly's. That will help you with your broken bolt problem in the future since it will keep it from rusting in place. I've used rtv in the past, but sometimes (depending on how much you have to use) it makes the bolt tough to get out later.
i still dont see where it would go into a water jacket.... that bolt goes into the pump into the timing cover and becomes visible again on the back of the timing cover
That Hole goes clear thru into the coolant jacket in the block. You can buy a can of pipe thread sealer at the local hardware store to use on the threads. The whole can will cost you less than a tube of the fancy stuff at the parts house. There are four bolts thru the pump and timing cover that need it (2 per side) and if you've got a roller block there, all the lower head bolts need sealer too
but this bolt doesnt go into the block at all... it only threads into the timing cover... its only about an inch and a half long and comes back through the other side and is visible between the water pump and the block
the bolt goes through the water pump and comes out right there... it never makes it to where the timing cover bolts to the block
Are those grade 3 hardware bolts? If so, 3 problems I see. Correct length, strength, and good chance of rust and breakage down the road when removed. Junkyard or buy correct bolt kits from Summit, ebay etc. Not picking, just trying to help. Has to be in cooling system or why the water?
Then you have a defective timing cover. Only thing that'll stop it from leaking is welding it. JB Weld would work, but not with antifreeze. Went thru that with an aluminum radiator. It'll hold for a week or two, then the antifreeze seeps between the JB and the aluminum. Or simply replace the timing cover with a good-un and sell the leaker for scrap.
