B&M's Sport Shifter has the cable coming out the back requiring a loop in the cable. That doesn't seem like the best design but it they've sold a bunch so I guess it can't be too bad. But, there are two problems with the way the cable would run on my car. First, where the cable would exit the drive shaft tunnel and make the turn forward, it would have to bend kinda sharply and it would be within a couple of inches of the exhaust pipe. Second, with the shift lever on the transmission pointing down, that end of the cable will be even closer to the exhaust pipe. Trying to think of ways to skin this cat. Anyone have any suggestions? Seems like the design that would fit the car best would have a cable coming out the front of the shifter and the shift lever on the trans pointing up. Looks like about an 18" cable would work great. Haven't seen any shifters like that.
Not sure they are the same as far as the cable routing. My Megashifter has it coming out the front and I had to clearance the front edge of my hole in the hump. My first cable did burn. This second one is now routed AWAY from the exhaust as best I could do. I think I remember going through a bolt hole in the trans cross member mounting area.
Hey Gene, Thanks, that helps. Do you remember if the cable loops or goes straight to the shift lever? Jim Edit: Checked the online install instrucitions for the Mega Shifter. The cable does loop. Wonder how hard it would be to fab a rod to go straight to the shift lever.
My Hurst looks like Genes. It makes a big loop over the trans tunnel towards the passenger side Then through the crossmember, under the tail stock and up to the linkage on the drivers side. You need the long cable and big loop to reduce stress on the cable.
The lever points down on all aftermarket cable shifters..... I use a TurboAction Cheetah shifter which has a rear exit cable, but the use a much better morse cable then most other shifters use..... I have had these all but touching the exhaust with no problems when wrapped with a DEI soft insulation sleeve.....
I was wondering about using header wrap where the cable is close to the exhaust pipe. But you wrapped the cable. Think I'll do both. Can you suggest which product(s) would be good for that? http://www.designengineering.com/products.asp
Good idea to wrap the cable. My exhaust is now wrapped and that was a chore. Took a long time. The wrap goes back further than where the cable gets close to the pipe. The only pic I could find is from the pass side. Yes, I had the flanges removed.
