C4 Transmission

    Just got another C4 transmission and I took the transmission pan off to replace it and the filter. I found 3 bolts inside it, it looks like they came off the top part because it was missing 4 total. I havent installed it yet to see if it works. They screwed back in and there not stripped. From the bolts being off do you think its fried? :hmmm: I guess I will find out once I install it.

    If the bolts came off the filter it is probably OK - the oil level is above the filter mounting point - but you may have a warped valvebody so watch for shifting problems.

    I would be suspect of someone tearing into it at one point. May have been an issue with the valve body, etc. I don't think those would just fall out. I would definitely go through it before putting it in the car. That would be a lot of work to find out that it was fried. - Matt

    These werent off the filter. Theres a box like thing that has a lot of bolts on it.The filter also bolts to this box thing. Thats where the bolts came out of. It also looks like someone put a bolt upside down in the transmission. I dont know anything about transmissions at all besides how to install one. It came out of a 74 comet with a 302.

    That box thing is your valve body... same caution applies especially if you over-tightened the bolts.

    Also the transmission pump has two gears, I never seen this before, one spins freely the other doesnt budge by hand in any gear. I dont know if its suposed to move or not. I hope the 4th bolt I havent found yet isnt stuck somewhere in there causing it not to move.

    If I take the valve body off, what should I be looking for as far as damage and what torque should they be titghened too? Thanks for your help!

    Time to tear it down....
    The inner gear is spun by the converter snout and the other rotates in the housing.
    The crescent that separates them can bind the gears if the pump housing is worn.
    If the pump is worn then that metal has gone through the converter, transmission and the cooler. Never a good thing. You can chamfer the intake end of the crescent with a die grinder to keep them from binding but if the housing is that worn it may not produce the pressures you need. It still might run but for how long?

    I did only try to spin it by hand and not with the converter on. I will try it tonight and see if it does move with converter in place. I will let you know what I find out. Thanks again Paul!

    I put the convertor in and it spun perfectly fine torqued the missing bolts to specs, Installed my tranny mount and oil pan. Will install today after work if I have time to see if it works.:drive:





    Why do I always need one more part?:whip:

    Well I installed the transmission fixed my transmission lines. Fired it up and topped it off with fluid. Went through all the gears, they seem to work fine and I was able to get up to 70 before I decided to quit before my neighbors call the cops because of the open headers. I will hopefully be able to test it this weekend on the road and not on jack stands. Thanks again for everyones help and especially Rick! :Handshake
