Hello this may seem like a weird question but what is a fair price on a oil change?

I believe there are $25 deals here in town at our valvoline I read in the paper. Synthetic is of course higher.
I would guess $25-30 is fair maybe

Ya $25 is about average. On my new cars I can find coupons for a place near me to get a carwash and oil change for $25. Every so often my wife finds GroupOns for Big O Tires and buys 3 oil changes for $30.

$25-$35 seems to be the normal price-range here. It was always closer to $45 when I lived in CA.

Around here there are some $19.99 early bird specials.

I change my own though, except once when it was really cold out.

I'm the same, I just never trusted someone else changing the oil in my cars for some reason

My mom always used Valvoline Instant Oil Change. When I bought her car, the first time I changed the oil, I removed the filter with one finger and my thumb. :naughty: Same thing happened on my van when I had it changed during the winter.

I pay a lot more but I use 16 quarts of oil. LOL

On my Mavericks I do my own. Take the old oil to O'reillys or a friends shop in town.:)

I change my own in two of my cars - Comet being one of them.
I don't trust the oil change outlets. I don't want my pan threads stripped or filter just hanging on. My cars don't get much driving so I only change them on average once a year "normally in the fall". On my 3rd car " 06 Lucerne" I take it to the Buick dealer. I recycle the oil at the place of purchase...

Yeah, I work in a shop. just not today. We don't skimp out on oil changes. it is full service around here. for about $38 your getting oil out of a 55gallon drum and a parts master filter. some bug brand green pisser fluid. a lube job. and a shakedown of yer undercarriage.

I too have had bad service at "some oil change place". cost me an engine for the wrong oil filter.

I don't want to say don't trust them all. we have a big window that the customers can see us from the waiting room.

I have seen some tire machines and balancers go through auctions for a steal. Im always broke though.. seen two post hoists also... everything less than $500 a piece. Still waiting on my ASE test results before I start buying that stuff. seen an exhaust pipe bender two weeks ago sell for just under $700. Most shops around here charge $65/hr labor. How many shop visits would It take for most of you before you could have bought the equipment to do it yourself. not to mention everyone you know that would sling you ten bucks here and there to change a tire for them?

one thing to keep in mind when you take your car to a professional shop is how much of the money you pay is going to the mechanic. a big corporate chain wont be paying its mechanics as much as a smaller shop may be paying. so the mechanic that is being payed a low pay rate will be working faster and sloppier to get more work done. see mechanics traditionally get paid by the job, not by how many hours they are at work for. i highly recommend finding a small independent shop that you can establish a good relationship with to do your auto repair and service work.
