We have been adjusting the linkage at the transmission and it now shifts through all the gears, but when putting it into PARK, it may or may not lock. It WILL lock when we push up on the shifter and rock the car, but I am afraid it will fall out randomly. Any suggestions? Not my car, by the way. Working on Phreeq's 71 with column shift C4
Any play in the linkage?? Hole the shifter arm at the trans firm and move the column shift. How much play?
If its the c4, I've had this happen. It was the shift linkage out of adjustment. I bought a ford trans book by haynes, and followed the steps for the rod linkage adjustment. It worked. Never had a problem with it not locking in park again.
DOH!!! I have that book. Didn't even think of looking at it! Phreeq, swing back by this week and we will do it right, it you don't see it hooking better.
Make sure the plastic bushings are in good shape. I have seen those being worn out, and even totally missing, and cars having this problem. On the cars with none....a previous owner just drilled a hole in the linkage and put in a cotter pin. NOT the way to fix a missing bushing.
Well, just read the book, and pretty much what I did, except I did it in 1, and not in D. When he comes back over, we will do it correctly and see if it fixes his problem.
Finally getting a chance to get on here. Thanks for all of the tips, guys. I may either swing by your place or have you swing by mine either tomorrow or Tuesday night to look at it.
I have a full day of work on monday and half day tuesday, free the rest of the week. The "8 lbs pressure downwards" may be our problem. I will need you to get in there and hold the shifter down a bit while I crank down on the bolt...
Sorry, you don't know what I am talking about...I didn't list out the instructions here. The book says to move the shifter tightly toward D keeping 8 pounds of downward force on the shifter, meanwhile, I move the transmission to D and crank down on the bolt. That is supposed to line it all up.
Previously, I just put in in 1, put the tranny in 1, and cranked down the bolt. It ran through all the gears correctly, and went into park, but only half the time.
