when i started up my comet this morning i noticed some white smoke come up next to me by the passengerside door. i figured it was just burning off some excess fuel or moisture but at the 3 lights i stopped at on my 10 mile trip i noticed that white cloud creeping up next to me on the passnegerside, but when i got on the gas i didnt notive any Puff through my mirror. when i parked at school there was still some white smoke comming up out of the rear passengerside wheel well. since my exhaust is so rusty it makes sence that it would be there and not the tail pipe. im on break in the library now so i havent had a chance to inspect but im thinking collent leak through a blown head gasket into a cylinder? the car in question is a '76 250/c4 comet 4 door. its my beater daily driver and id like to keep it on the road as long as i can lol

Need to check and see if you are losing any coolant. Check it every morning before you start the car and see if the level is going down.
ok so i just got home and i didnt see any smoke(forgot to check the collent before i got in) when i give it throttle at a low rpm it didnt rev up smooth, it was kinda jumpy. at least at parking lot speeds, seemed fine on the highway. it was probably missing in that cylinder though? that started pulling out of the parking spot at school anyway, its snowing and like 30 below right now so i'll have to look into it further when im not freexing my hands off just unlocking the door
Could just be condensation from being so cold out? I know when I started mine up this morning, there was a constant stream of white smoke coming out the tail pipes since it was so cold out. Burning coolant usually has a distinct smell to it.
Sounds like condensation to me.Check your coolant level, you can look at the body where the smoke?? was and see if the car is slimy there.Coolant will leave a pale green slime behind(think heater core and steamed up windshield)Bet it was condensate though. As for the running problem.Leaky plug wire(wet)choke not pulling off completely when warm,or wet cap/rotor.Good luck.
I had a modulator valv go out in my Ranger. As I was driving a hugecloud of white smoke would come out. people on I-540 would definitely move to the pasing lane and slow way down. LOL. It seems trans fluid was being sucked up into the motor. soon (2 weeks) later I needed a trans rebuild.
ive heard of the modulator going bad, ill definatly check that too. i figured that would be more blue like oil smoke but i'll take your word for it it was just way too cold today to get into anything lol
I've had that happen too. First time I started my '74 Grabber up after wrecking it, it started smoking like you wouldn't believe. It was a huge cloud of white smoke coming out of the exhaust. I figured at the time that the block was cracked or something from the wreck. When I pulled the engine, I found trans fluid in the vacuum modulator line. Put a rebuilt trans behind the engine and dropped it in my '72, sure enough no more smoke. Ran it for another 54,000 before it ended up burning a valve.
In the cold weather the moisture from the air will cause some steam from the exhaust. If you don't see it while driving down the road or under decelleration then just figure it is atmospheric condensation. If it happens under acceleration then it is probably coolant. If it happens under decelleration then it is a bad modulator more than likely. What you seem to be explaining is just condensation - not to worry.
i have been losing a lot of tranny fluid lately....ever since the smoke started....i will replace the mod on thursday....been smokingand draining tranny fluid for 2 months...hope i do not need a rebuild...... was thinking the piston rings were gone but with the tranny fluid leaking and the smoke....seems likely. replaced rear main seal a month ago as well and still get oil leaking from the bell housing. first replaced the seal and did not off set...second time i DID off set the seal and there is still oil leaking....needs a quart every other day or so..... any ideas?
