I was just wondering the difference in a 1971 mustang hich back bucket seats and the 72-73 mustang high back bucket seats. I was getting ready to recover a set to put in the 1972 grabber I am building and was looking for parts on the internet and noticed that some of the parts will cover 71-73 and sone will only go on a 71 and other parts on a 72-73.

    Thanks for the knowledge.

Possibly the location of the seat back release ... side vs. center

A few years ago I saw a company that made new foam for the buckets, but with better side and seat bottom bolstering for support. Made the seats look more like sport seats. Anyone know who was doing that?

Bob..wasn't that the TMI sport seat for 65-68 mustangs? I thought those would look great in a Mav.

That looks great, but I think I remember someone just selling the foam for the seats and you could reupholster the seats to look stock with better support

That is correct about the seat release being different for 71 (center, making the seats interchangeable side-to-side) vs. 72-73 with a side release lever. This also means that later seat backs are side-specific.

Frankly, the side releases do not work so well. I have never been happy with them on my 1973 seats. Just rebuilt my passenger seat, got as much slop out of the system as possible, and now that the seat is back together, I have found that it still doesn't really release the latch. I will be tripping the latch itself ... still, unless I figure something else out about it.

I also have reused the old foam, (still in pretty good shape) and added more foam and batting in the bolster areas, as described above. Here is a picture of the seat ....

This is TMI 71-73 Mustang Coupe upholstery being used. More details at my project thread ...

The seat back frames themselves are the same from side to side having locating holes for the latch for either front/left/center. The seat release mechanism is side specific. You can switch the latches though. I had to do this with a couple of seats.

I should have clarified that a bit ... as stated the frames are the same side-to-side, it is the release mechanisms and the plastic seat back panels that are side-specific on the later seats.

Not sure if the 1971 seat frames have the openings in the back for the later release mechanisms ... might be something to look into. Easy enough to modify if they didn't.

Thank you guys for your answers. That is exactly what I was looking for. I wanted to make sure that I ordered the right parts. The seats I am working on have the releases towards the outerboard portion of the seat. I will keep you guys posted on the progress.
