On my 1976 Maverick there is a cylinder type device next to the firewall that looks like a vacume tube should be connected to it. Anyone know what it is and where the vacume line goes?
That is the vacuum reservoir for factory a/c cars. One of the nubs has a line that goes to the manifold for vacuum, and the other line goes inside for the a/c heat selector switch. The "valves"/doors in the a/c vent system are vacuum operated. -Corbin
It shouldn't be there if it's not an a/c car. Is it? Maybe it is some smog thing I don't know about? I am not familliar with the smog stuff on 74-77 Mavs. What side is it on? -Corbin
I believe the car did at one time have factory A/C. It is located on the passenger side next to the firewall. Is this also called the "vacume cannister"?
If the car had factory a/c, then the climate controls are vacuum operated. Without the vacuum hooked up to the controls, you will not be able to change where the air comes out, and I believe the default in this case is the defrost vents on the dash.
I have diagrams for how to re-line the vacuum system on early mavs. I used this on my 74, and was able to replace all vacuum lines, and everything worked wonderfully, until I burned out my Heater fan motor. Need scans?
Yep, since it had a/c that is the vacuum canister for the a/c system. If you need a vacuum diagram, check this out: http://www.geocities.com/cping3/WiringDiagrams.html -Corbin
