I'm taking my 9 inch center section apart and have a question that I'm sure that many here can help me with. I was about to remove the ring gear from my Traction Loc carrier and forgot if the bolts, that hold the ring gear on, are right hand or left hand thread. I put the 5/8 socket on the first bolt with a breaker bar and that is when my spider sense told me to ask before I break something :yup:

Well, I got my 9 inch center section apart and knocked out the races to get some part numbers before I even called Moser Engineering to order the bearing/install kit. It was a good thing that I did this because the front pinion support turned out to be what they call a Datona Support and that takes a completely different kit from stock. I was all ready to tear apart the traction loc assembly to check the clutches but a phone call to my engine builder (who is going to change my 3.50 gears over to the new 3.90 gears and do the set up) told me to leave the carrier intact when I bring him down the rear.

So that was the end of my lefty loosy/righty tighty lesson for the day :D

That's the very same center section that my, now 393, Cleveland has always put it's power to since 1972 when my Q code 72 Gran Torino Sport was built. The top loader is still original to that matched set also.

When this Maverick finally moves under it's own power, the drive train will be having a reunion party

It looks like u have tore it down. Ur re-assembling it B4 going to the builder or do u have another carrier. Kind of curious/confused.

I tore the case down to the point it is now only so I could get bearing/race part number because 9 inch bearing/rebuild kits go by bearing size when you order them. Also I needed to know if I had the Daytona front pinion housing (which holds the pinion in place) because that also gets different size bearings than the stock pinion housing. Now I'm leaving the carrier, that you can see in the photo, intact which is the internal assembly that houses the spider gears, the traction loc clutch pack and the ring gear bolts to. How you see it in the parts photo is how I will take it to the rebuilder. :)

Ok Bob! Thanks for the explanation. That's what I like abt being here. Most/vast majority of members don't mind explaining to those of us new to the Maverick and car hobby. The only thing I know abt rear axle housing is how to remove the axles out. When it goes beyond im heading for the driveline specialist. The last time I removed carrier was decades ago frm my 61 Galaxie. I had the unit in my Comet done abt 1.5 yrs ago "axle bearing to axle bearing".
I don't believe I am able to do that heavy lifting on my back or I might have remove the carrier and took it the builder. So, I just took the car to the builder. In my case that probably was the safest but cost the most...(y)

I just hope I was able to answer your question without getting too long winded. I also have back problems. Mine comes from being stupid in my younger years when I was invincible  I picked up the entire, way too heavy, center section from the garage floor and carried it over to the work bench. I'm glad it is broken down for the trip to the speed shop :dancing:
