Did you get an alignment? Also look at the leaf spring bushings in the rear. If they are worn out it will let the back end wiggle.

did you check for play in all the joints in the front steering? Especially where the pitman arm attaches to the control valve? check each joint for play with somebody moving the wheel back and forth. I think there a total of 6 moving joints in the steering sytem. If there is play between the wheel and pitman arm then the steering box itself may be worn and need some adjustment to tightne it up.

No offense, but have you ever driven an old car before? Quite a few people get into Mavericks & Comets, and find the steering loose compared to newer cars, they just feel different...

Follow the steering column down in the passenger compartment. You'll see the cloth/rubber rag joint joining the column and the steering gear. Have someone sit in the car and move the wheel while you watch the joint and the gear and see if the steering shaft moves before the rag joint and gear do. If so, there is slop in them somewhere. You can replace the rag joint, and try to adjust the slop from the steering gear. Hope this helps.

I have found that the assisted steering is very sensitive. I can move my steering wheel ⅛" either direction to steer the car. I have gotten used to using the armrest or my leg to keep me from moving the wheel. I didn't like it at first, but now I'm used to it. There is a centering adjustment you can do on the control valve. If your setting is off, this will help. I'll try and find the thread on it. :)
