Was thinking about putting power steering in my 1971 maverick.
Anybody know how hard this would be to do?

Should I then do a disc brake conversion?

Yes you should do the disk brakes too, they are probably more important then the power steering.

What kind of power steering are you interested in? The factory hydraulic assist that came on these cars? Aftermarket rack and pinion that requires minor modification? Or an integral power steering box like the Borgeson unit?

The cheapest way to do it would probably find an old factory unit that someone has pulled off their car (I have most of a factory setup I would give you, hey I would even trade the power steering center link and pitman arm for your manual unit if you want ) allot of people dont like them they tend to leak allot.

The rack and pinion setup and the borgeson setup can get pretty pricey but they are easier then peicing a stock unit together but depending on how much you want to spend they might be out of the question for you.

I guess I will focus on the disc brakes for now. :bouncy:
Yeah the borgeson unit is what I had in mind. As I heard the stock ones leak alot like you mentioned.

Sounds like a good plan to me :thumbs2:

There are only a few people that have the Borgeson units and only one running right now that I know of. But honestly from everything I know about them they get really good reviews. :bananaman

When my car had the original power steering, I would mark the calendar six months in the future to "fix the PS again". It really truly is that bad. The road feel is awful, too, very vague.

If you swap a power steering box in, without the ram, etc., you get a quicker ratio and a good road feel, but at very low speeds, the steering is quite heavy. Anything over 10 mph isn't bad, and I have a smaller diameter steering wheel to make way for my knees.

I did see the thread after talking to you. I am in Coeur d'Alene just east of Spokane Washington.

At the moment looking for some door lock knobs... who would of thought there is like 2 options that I can find anyone online...lol

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/68-78-Door-Lock-Knobs-Chrome-Fairlane-Torino-Galaxie-67-68-69-70-71-72-73-74-75-/221002649482?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Model%3AMaverick&hash=item3374c8cf8a&vxp=mtr

Seems plausible...not attractive but beats the gray plastic..

You can buy door lock knobs for half the price in your eBay link at any Mustang vendor. AK has them for $5.95...NPD has them at $4.95 a pair

you know the power steering on my 77 isn't leaking (nock on wood) and i don't think anything has ever been done to it. the car has 130000 miles on it. so you might luck out with a good set up.
