I have been working on a 77 maverick 2dr V8, took me 8 yrs to get her up and running and now that is complete i cannot drive it becasue there is not Car title and that means no way of get the lincess plates, safe sticker, etc. so i can drive the car legal. Does anyone have a Vin and title i can use, i am guessing that by changeing the VIN form a 2dr with title could work all i would need is to chacnge the title under my name. Some body please help pleaseeeeeeeeee
What you need to do is contact your states DOT and find out what to do for a lost title. Changing VIN numbers is a no-no as far as the all State and Federal governments are concerned. Every state has ways to issue titles to cars, when that cars original title is lost or stolen. If your VIN is missing from the dash, look for the "buck tag" on the firewall near the master cylinder and look at the data plate on the door jam or door. If there is no VIN, your state may be able to issue you a "home built" vehicle plate and give you a whole new VIN for the car. You do not want to go down the road of VIN swapping.
Not only good advice, but basically your only options. In GA, we are are fortunate that you don't have to have a title for cars over 14 years of age. You can still register them them and get tags.
Along these lines, is there any problem with moving the VIN tag when you switch out the dash? I can't see why that would be an issue.
If it helps any I have a title, vin and cowl tags from a `74 Nova 2dr....they kinda look like Mavericks.
TITLE 18. CRIMES AND CRIMINAL PROCEDURE PART I. CRIMES CHAPTER 113. STOLEN PROPERTY 18 USCS § 2321 (2003) § 2321. Trafficking in certain motor vehicles or motor vehicle parts (a) Whoever buys, receives, possesses, or obtains control of, with intent to sell or otherwise dispose of, a motor vehicle or motor vehicle part, knowing that an identification number for such motor vehicle or part has been removed, obliterated, tampered with, or altered, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than ten years, or both. 107 A.L.R.5th 567 SUMMARY: Illegally removing or altering a vehicle identification number (VIN) or selling or possessing a motor vehicle or motor vehicle part with an altered or removed VIN constitutes a crime in most states. In order to impose liability, state courts normally require a culpable mental state on the part of the defendant in altering or removing a VIN or in possessing a vehicle or vehicle part with an altered or removed VIN. Some states, however, do not require any culpable mental state on the part of the defendant when selling a vehicle or vehicle part with a removed or altered VIN. THREAD RESURRECTION! The '70 I bought in Texas has no title. I've been trying to get a hold of the last registered owner with no luck. I have a friend in GA and I wonder if I could get him to write a bill of sale to me for the car and then transfer to Oklahoma (since it's over 14 years old)? Comments anyone?
