I have had 2 carbs on my 302 and BOTH flood, i have 2 gas filters one on the carb and a glass inline. Gas is clean. one mechnic said i had crap in my gas and the float needed adjusting, it still flooded. i took it off and put on the one that came with the car and ITS flooding. any clues???

    Thanks!

The mav is gone but i'm still here!
Check the float level, are they holleys? If so a starting off point is to flip the bowls upside down and adjust them until the float is perfectly level.

That should get you in the ballpark to start off.

Are you still using a mechanical fuel pump?

let me start from the start.. Yes, it is a mechanical fuel pump..

I had an old motorcraft that came with the car and took it off and bought a new "AUTO ZONE REBUILD" but when i tried to keep a steady speed it would kinda shutter and it drove me nuts so i removed it and rebuilt the motorcraft that was on the car, and installed it and it would flood and flood and flood, so i took it off and replaced with with the "AUTO ZONE SPECIAL" and now its flooding also. I ve have had several shops go through the carbs and they say nothing is wrong. SO im STUMPED.. the "Auto zone special" is a motorcraft rebuild by United Carbs..

You might be onto something.. When the car died and i opened the hood the gas was PUMPING out of the top of the carb and it sounded like a electric pump pumping. but i know it doesnt have one. where is the vent on a 72? I have a NOS gas cap thats only about 1-2 years old.

    Thanks!

Not sure if it's in the cap or the top of the tank. You could try leaving the cap off to see if anything changes.. Not like all day going to work, just while checking it out..

But is there a vent on the gas tank also? or just vent from the cap? Down here In San Antonio, the Mud Daubbers LOVE vent holes!

whenever I've had a...stopped up vent...the carb. runs out of gas, never had it flood...it sucked the sides of the tank in...:yup:
it may be that the gas is expanding faster than the engine is burning it...exhaust pipe too close to tank or hole in pipe exiting onto the tank:huh:

Frank. Your situations are parnormal and are not applicable to our cars :D
Tanks usually swell/expand when they have no vent. Therefore I feel that it will push fuel and cause the flooding. Newer cars with FI release this pressure into the canistor like it was designed to be used.

"Tanks usually swell/expand when they have no vent." not if they have a fuel pump sucking on them...:yup:

a fuel pump can only pump gas out until the vac. overcomes the pump...

had my Harley one day run out of gas going down the interstate...I pulled over and removed the gas cap only to see gas in the tank...fired it up and drove about 2 more miles to have the same thing happen...come to find out it would run if I left the cap loose. when I got home and checked it out I found the vent hose between the two tank halves was pinched shut, causing a vac.
