I chose the aluminum RHS because i read a few places that they have very good flow and the price was also pretty good..i purchased bare heads, put my own springs, studs, guide plates, valves ect.. i am using the orig. '74 302 block from my comet as well. if you want to know anything else just ask..really wanted to see what time i could pull with a 302 next month at the track..who knows if ill make it..
You know, there have been times when I hated my life also...........and it was either based on wives (I've had 3), and with cars (I've had too many to count), especially when I ran into an issue that just had me stumped, but............the old rule of thumb that some very famous header builders have use.................for better low end use smaller longer tubes, and better high end use bigger shorter tubes...............so for your car I would say that you can take on a probject for this Winter.....building yourself a set of headers that will work and fit properly......................but for now find a header that comes close and use the "ball peen". The one thing that really helps...............and I don't know if you have access to an acetylene setup, but if you heat the tubes cherry read and then tap with the ball peen.........not too hard...............it makes a big difference rather than doing it cold...............so don't worry about hp lose..........you will not notice any difference in performance..............sending good thoughts your way.
thanks john appreciate it..ill get my dads acetylene and stuff... (hes been a welder for 25 years) and ill get the shortys to fit..or go back and grab my used hookers (hahaha) and make them fit
Looked at my FlowTechs last night, and they look like they come off the head fairly straight. Take a look at them, and see if they can fit your heads better. The part# is: FLT12100.
We have world sr. heads on ours 6901's had the same problem with wires use shorty plugs and 45 boots with looms that fit on valve cover studs, looms hold the boot at an angle fairly tight to block have not had any burn for a couple of years now. Got unv. wires and looms from summit and made them up.
Alright guys the verdict is in on Hedman shortys! I only gotthe drive side on right now.. But it was the issue side. #7 and #8 have so much clearance it's crazy. #5 I can get on but needs to be heated and add a 1/4" clearance to be safe.. #6 well it needs some serious work but I think this will do it, hookers I needed to do all 4 and these only barely one and then 6.. I think we got the winner boys.. As I look at these now this winter it will take me a day to make proper pipes out of it..they look so easy I need to add a 1" chunk and a 90* bend to the flange on 6. Time to throw on the pass side and see how t looks! Wish I could upload pics from my phone like Facebook
With the Heddman's, do you have an issue with the pipes hitting the pitman arm? I did, so I have them in the shed till I can get the tube moved a bit.
These are the shortyss Earl, They run overtop it and then head down.. At the moment I've almost got #5 done... And like a quarter of the way with the serious massage work needed to 6.. Not sure if I shoulda just changed the pipe now instead of beating on it for hours.. I've started now so why stop.
I hear ya"! The shorties I have are for a Maverick (88400), but we all know how that goes. Good luck, hope it works out.
Well I got both headers on.. 1/4" clearance on number 6 and lots everywhere else.. Gotta get some exhaust on this thing now... Thank god for the acetylene torch on getting it shaped up.. Gotta also get another plug because I noticed a fracture in one..wierd, also switching to all 90* plugs. Thanks to everyone for the input and idea's I appreciate it and I hope this is the end up it until I re-make the driver side. I'll just carry a few spare plug wires in the trunk incase something happens lol.
Glad you got it sorted out....................just keep working through the issue usually gets it done.........................IMHO
