The previous owner of car had transmission rebuilt years ago, he thinks something was done wrong because since then if car has been sitting for a couple days it can take 20 or so seconds for the car to go into 1st gear but reverse is always immediate. After the initial problem it works fine other than shifting really slow from 2-3 and revs up, I think this is what people were calling shift flare. Any thoughts on what can be done? Is this something simple or needs rebuild? Car is perfectly drive able just annoying sometimes.

Sounds like it's possibly a couple different issues. You could have someone (or do it yourself) do some pressure testing and it may reveal something. Most likely the trans will need to come back out and be looked at internally.

Is this something I could do myself? I am fairly capable but have never done anything with a automatic transmission before.

The pressure check is easy, the rebuild is a little more difficult. With the proper tools you can do it.....a man designed it, a man can rebuild it.
