Can I mount my 12" sub into my rear-seat delete back?

Or do I need to put it into a box?

I was wondering if the trunk would act as a decent box or would I need to isolate the speaker more for better sound?

Depends on the sub. Most likely you will need a box for the sub to have optimum airspace

Kicker Comp 12, if that helps.

Yeah that's a maximum of 3 and half foot airspace. You'll need a box for sure. I have a kicker comp 10 in my daily and the box is only a foot of airspace and it sounds great! I'm not a big fan of BOOM BOOM music, I like tight, precise bass from the music I like and it works great for just that!

Then I will try to buy a box specific for a 12" sub and just try to mount it the the back of the seat back. If I cut the front face off the box, I can move it around to make it fit in the space behind the seat while still holding the sub inside the box.

Should be as simple as building a lil box into your delete panel

Just looked in there, and WOW! I never realized how little space is back there!!!

I was looking to see what amp I have, it is a 400 watt kicker punch amp.

Infinite baffle is not suitable for that type of subwoofer or that setup.

If you build a ported box into that baffle it would sound very good with minimal noise from the trunk and other areas.

So the port would come back into the passenger bay, right?

I never even thought about using a ported setup.

I believe a ported setup provides better sound characteristics, plus more sound frm less pwr. I have a home built ported box for an 8" driver built to the mfg's specs in my daily driver. I hve a 10" in a commercial non-ported in my Comet w/ the specified air space volume recommend by mfg. I have had both of them in the Comet and the 8" is a lot more to my liking.
I had the 10" originally mounted on a pcs of MDF w/o any enclosure; I did not like it.
Granted, I did'nt have a port setup and don't think it wud have made a lot of difference. Had I fully covered the trunk area w/ sound deadner that might have made a difference. Can't really say. I do have some deadner.
The only reason I have not put/left the ported 8" in the Comet is it is physically larger.
I have both of them setup w/ quick-disconnects if I want to switch them over.
I am like Starsky74, I don't like Boom Boom music. I think putting the speaker in the metal trunk w/o the box will give u a lot of resonance, esp., if u push the volume to any degree.

That sub is not particularly powerful neither is the amplifier.

Having more output than necessary gives you headroom. Lowers distortion at the listening volume and can improve low end sound.

A ported box gives you the ability to get improved output and tune the peak to your desired frequency.

I never use MDF. You can buy decent quality 7 or 9 ply birch from home depot or lowes. It is expensive but one sheet should cover the enclosure with room to spare.

The ply is much more rigid which can cause some audible resonance at higher frequencies (negligible), but the weight savings will be worth it in the long run. Also ply is resistant to moisture and does not crumble.

For a beginner I would download the "torres box calculator"

I can walk you through a simple enclosure design in about 2 minutes and it will out perform any sealed or IB setup in every way.

Still too hot to work on the car here in SE Texas. A couple more cold fronts, and the humidity will drop enough that I can get to work on it.
