I'm installing all electronic gauges next week in my car....what's the best method to install the wiring for quick disconnect? The reason for it is so that I can take the dash on and off more efficiently ....
best method?.... install with longer extentions so it can easily be accessed, then tuck the extra up with clips out of the way, my first thought was weatherpak connectors. guess I'm not sure of your question completely
I think weatherpak is a great idea. I just bought a weatherpak kit actually for another purpose. Basically what I'm looking to do is undo the bolts that hold the dash to the car and remove the whole dash with all the gauges in place. Because the gauges are electronic (vs mechanical) I would have a bunch of wires still connecting the dash to the car. I don't really want to do bullet connectors because that's just not as reliable.
go to a junk yard and steal an engine harness connector off a gm 3.8, like a grand prix, monte carlo, regal etc.. it has an inline sealed 24way or something close to that right in the open If you really interested I can go out to the garage and count the number of wires there is on my spare harness....
thanks, good idea with the junk yard option but I'm badly pressed for time, don't think I'll make it out anytime soon... as for the wiring, the gauges need a small 1amp fuse each...what's the best way to wire the gauges up?
JLG man lifts have a 32 pin bulk connector that I love to use on things like this. Genie man lifts also sells a connector kit that have weather proof plastic deutz connectors. Also a great kit. Has from 2 pin to 12 or 16 pin connectors. Great kit that is easy to use. You will need the crimper which is also avalible from Genie Industries.
I use Mil-Spec connectors on customer's cars, late model and import guys love them. http://www.digikey.com/product-sear...cts/circular/1441934?k=d38999&lang=en&cur=USD
the one i have is not that great. we need to get a good one for that. they a little pricey when ive seen them.
So I take it then you aren't going to reinstall the screws at the front of the dash at the base of the windshield? You have a plan for those or are you just going to leave it loose? I'd think it would rattle like crazy.
I actually left the screws that hold the top of the dash to the bottom of the windshield out and tucked that part of the dash under the windshield. It doesn't look very good but that's only if you look there. The good thing is there is no rattle at all. I know the trick is people install the screw from the bottom so that they don't have to lift the lip of the windshield gasket to get to them.
You can't beat the price and durability of J/Y factory connectors, the others shown are top notch, but very expensive...
I used to build and install the electrical portions of new bucket trucks/digger derricks for Altec Industries. I used a lot of these type connectors and they are top notch. Great solid seal and most are waterproof too. Some of these are in my plans for my own car
yea but trying to order them online isn't easy, it's something I will get to install the engine harness once the EFI is ready to go....
