74 Maverick with 200 six. Had some rear end noise with a leaky pinion gear. I checked the oil and it was real low. I want to replace the o ring inside the pinion I can not find it. Can anyone help?

There is an o-ring around the pinion support and a seal in the front of the pinion support. Nothing on the pinion or yoke. Using silicone on the pinion splines to prevent a leak there.

If its leaking past the pinion seal...The pinion bearings are done...Seals dont just fail, excessive bearing play takes em out. A new seal may stop the leak for a while but its just a crutch. Especially since you stated that the diff is making noise.

Maybe I am calling it the wrong thing. However it is the part that bolts to the drive shaft and goes into the rear end. There is a rubber seal that goes around the shaft it slides inside the rear end. There is no gasket only a metal shim in between the two parts. The o-ring is what I am trying to fine and cannot @ a parts store.

The yoke attaches to the drive shaft and has a large nut in the center that secures it to the pinion gear. Thepinion gear rides inside the pinion support and has 2 bearings with a spacer designed to set the bearing preload.
Sounds like your describing the pinion support which is secured to the differential housing with 5 bolts. The metal shim is used to adjust the pinion depth.
Since the rear is already making noise, I think a rebuild is required. Removing the yoke and replacing the seal effects the bearing preload and will cause problems later.

Now that we have the proper names, I agree with you. However I can not find a rebuild kit at any of the local auto parts stores. I am going to a specialized rear end place tomorrow to try and locate parts.

I had some rear end noise in my truck on the way home from Georgia today and my wife had to keep putting down the window. Oh wait you're talking about a different thing.......

I was thinking of just putting in the one out of my comet. When I took it out nothing wrong just went with a lower gear ratio.

Are there any problems I need to watch out for when changing from a 200 six rear to a 302 rear.

If it's a 8" its the same rear. Make sure the brake lines on the other rear are ok, or swap them. Also replace the U bolts most likely they are weak and taking the nuts off will weaken them even more.

Its still interchangable, but your car will be slower out the hole do to a higher ratio. Although you may not feel a difference as it's not much of a change.

I do not think my wife cares, she is the one that drives it. What about axels splines are they the same??

To my knowledge all 8" rears had 28 spline axles.
