Picked up Bry at 545am, got Bfast and left at 620am... did well until we pulled into a gas station... fuel line on the holley pump was leaking... fixed that.... also had noticed water temp getting up to 242... looked everything over and couldn't figure out why, we had already switched to a 180F thermostat...
we decided to let things cool off and then took off driving again... was getting a little over 10 mpg at that point... did pretty well getting into vegas except we were running a little behind but made it to the caravan going to Ash Springs and then to Ely.... this lady in the AMX said she drove the Spector Maverick ....pretty cool lady.
then driving on the way to Ash Springs we barely made it to a gas station as we were watching out fuel pressure sink slowly ...the more we slowed down the more it would drop.... So we stopped for a bit and got a bag of ice and a squirt bottle and just tried cooling the fuel pump down... it was super hot and it was likely because the exhaust was running close to the tank since we now had tail pipes... bry came up with the awesome idea to just remove the cut outs and run open headers...we installed the extensions hoping it would divert heat away from the tank and away from under the car.... that worked great .... we got to the meet on hwy 318 .... in all the excitement forgot to get gas.... ran SUPER low...middle of no where... we were both tripping a little... yes, it was getting lower and lower..... thank goodness our genius shop manager packed us a gas tank that we had filled, didn't need to use it... basically coasted to the first gas station... 85 octane... made it in time for the big buffet dinner... lots of fun ....
tomorrow have to adjust the clutch which now won't engage well... have to figure out a heat shield for the gas tank... have to mount GPS, phone, stop watch and clip board... have to get car tech'd ... have to get the details on the one mile shoot-out... try to get an alignment .... install the gopro.... we bought a SPAL fan as a pusher....might install that just for the drive home....
Highly doubt the exhaust has anything to do with the low fuel pressure...Sounds like the pump is working harder because of an obstruction or venting problem
Looks like Mary Posi. She's a legend in the Autocross circuit. Thats Jimi Day's AMX. Featured in PHR magazine a couple months ago. Great guy. He was taking pics of my car at the Goodguys last summer. How does that spoiler make the car feel? Notice a difference yet at cruising speed?
Clean car, is that wimbledon white? Love the car overall but having a hard time with the cowcatcher, just seems out of place.
it took us a lot of pontification to figure out the problem with the fuel pump and after making the proper changes it seemed to alleviate the problem. I'm sure time will tell where the problem is coming from. At this time the hot fuel tank certainly can't be helping the fuel pump. Repeatedly at cooler temps the pump functions better than at higher temps. As for the cow catcher, it certainly is gonna appeal only to a few in the maverick or muscle car community. Its purpose is more to direct air to the right places. We'll be sure to post more about how functional it ended up being. Both Bry and I are really impressed with how it turned out in many ways. here we are at the tech inspection line... changing jets...
Very cool to see you and the Mav at this event. That front spoiler is going to help a ton at higher speeds. Was the fuel pump heat problem getting worse as the fuel was also getting in short supply? Are you running a vented gas cap? ... I am thinking perhaps it may be working against more of a created vacuum as the tank empties
