Hello again. So yesterday I was driving the comet and noticed that the speedometer was fluctuating quite a bit, and I felt as though I was going much more slowly than what the speedometer said. A friend of mine was driving behind me and when we stopped she started asking me why I was driving so slowly. I told her I had been driving 60 (the speed limit) most of the way and she said I was driving more like 45. Any ideas on what would be causing this? I havent messed with the cable or anything so I dont know what would be causing the problem.

Could be a bad speedo cable (Or lack of lubrication) Most likely
Could be a bad speedo gear (On tranmission end of speedo cable) Possible
Could be a bad speedometer (It is 40 yrs old) Least likely but not impossible
You didnt say if the rear end gears have been changed or which transmission you have though...

Sorry about that. Its a C4 transmission, and as far as I know the rear gears haven't been changed. The guy I bought it from kept a little book that he wrote down everything he ever did to it, and that doesnt say anything about the rear end so I assume no. It was working fine the day before aside from the slight fluctuating.

Most likely, the cable is binding in the sheath. You can remove it and lubricate it with a light oil like 3 in one or silicone spray. The fun part is disconnecting the cable from the back of the instrument cluster. Do a search on speedo cable removal. The search feature of the forum here is your best freind...Just be prepared to do a fair amount of reading and sifting through the threads...Good luck
