Being a teenager during the 60's when everything had drum brakes ( except for a few of the British sports cars ), Nobody had issues with the brakes that I remember! Of course, they were asbestos back then and may have gripped better. The only issue I can recall was if you went through deep water, you had to " ride " the brakes to dry them out. This was a common practice, so everyone knew to do it! Now, your disc brakes pads are constantly in contact with the rotor so this procedure is no longer necessary. :)

i can run consistent 11.80s to 11.90s with no problems on drums just make sure they are all adjusted properly.

    Hope so!
The asbestos probably helped, I don't think ford thought that these cars would ever need to provide the braking needed to slow the car from triple digit speeds(or anyone would ever even do that), especially in a 4 door.

I'd be more worried about the street tires hooking than the drum brakes stopping...

If I were you I'd try to at least have drag radials, otherwise you'll be lucky to get into it till midway of 2nd gear...

I'd rather spin than blow the 8" into a million pieces. I think I could get into it near the top of first and get traction.

My Maverick has 120 on the speedo, not that it means it could do it, but my old 67 Fairlane with a 390 sure could and stopped fine with the same drum brakes! Back then the roads were long and straight so the brakes weren't actually put to a stress test, but as I recall, I had no problems.
You know, it is probably like ac. You didn't have it, so you never missed it! You didn't have really decent brakes, but you never drove anything with them to know the difference! :rofl2:

i run 10.60's at 125 with drum brakes with no problems, and I have raced at island dragway many times, wich is a 1/4 mile with an 1/8 mile shut down, Englishtown has a 1/4 mile shutdown so thats no problem at all.

Then it's gonna blow the tires off when it shifts to second, assuming the 8" holds...

You need a good driveshaft as well(also a loop), I've seen a good 289 twist a stock small block D/S into two pieces...

    Drums are good.................and heavy.
The last pass on the car with 4 wheel drum brakes (and the brakes were fairly need with metalic shoes) I did a 9.801 in the 1/4......................and went off the end of the strip at Redding. Redding has less than 1/8 shut down and only one turn off!
Now the car has 4 wheel disc brakes...........................and a chute just to be safe..............although I may never have to use it..................unless I go back to Redding.
