after I came back from the silver state race I started slipping my clutch, probably the 3.0 gears. I had a fairly stock clutch. This is what the clutch and flywheel looked like after Bry removed them. Bry had the flywheel resurfaced, it's a decent aluminum one. and he ordered a king cobra clutch, can't wait to go drag racing again...
Why are you using a diaphragm style clutch? HP will blow right through them and slip. Here's a pic of my 20 year old Borg & Beck clutch that got hammered on a lot on the street. Only reason I replaced it was because I had the transmission out.
The stock disc has 6 damper hub springs...yours has 5. The aftermarket disc has 8. Guess I need to post the pressure plate pics. Look half way down this page http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles/clutch_basics/viewall.html and read this http://www.ramclutches.com/critical difference/critical_difference_clutch_discs.htm and click next page at bottom to read about pressure plates.
we got this clutch from south land clutch. the pressure plate is a king cobra spec pressure plate and the disk is now a dual friction. south land said that this combo is good for 550 hp and 600 tq. that old clutch had over 20,000 miles on it. it got fried from a combination of having 3.0 gears in the rear for the silver state classic and using a light weight fly wheel. both of these situations require slipping the clutch more to get the car to start moving. mo only uses the 3.0 gears for the silver state classic and normally has 4.10 gears. mo is now planning on putting a supercharger on this motor. i firmly believe that this clutch will work just fine for his needs.
if this clutch doesnt hold we will be switching to a dual disk clutch from mccloud. their clutch is supposed to be able to handle over 1000 hp and have very good street manors.
Bry painted the bellhousing, I didn't have enough money to buy an SFI certified one so this will have to do for now. Got the T5 in place Got the slave cylinder bracket installed and that was it, pretty simple...
Mo, of course I've been following all you are doing again. How did those shocks end up working out? They are installing them on a mustang in the latest issue of Mod must and Fords. And I'm really impressed that you ran that fast NA, do you guys think as you add a supercharger that you might be out running the stock suspension?
With some of the racing he is planning to do he is required too keep the stock suspension in the car... But you also have to ask yourself if the stock suspension is so bad then how did all the trans am mustangs that have the same suspension in the 60's and 70's do so good?
I always think this when i hear of guys spending thousands upgrading to tubular A-arms, r&p steering, Mcpherson type struts, etc........
you know the suspension has done really well throughout the drag racing and the open road race. Bryant and I have some great ideas for beefing up the stock stuff we have. After what Bry explained to me everything you guys are saying seems totally true. I did end up buying tubular control arms because I'm worried that I won't have the time to make the changes that I want to make in time for the races I have planned. thanks for following the build, I'm learning so much about the car. right now it's sitting at the shop, the electrical work I did was great except that I'm blowing a fuse every time I move the fuse block around so it's grounding out somewhere in my fancy shmancy wiring work....not a problem, I'll figure it out....
