I am about to put my rebuilt 302 back into my 77 Maverick. We removed it with the C-4 attached and hope to install it back the same way. It had exhaust manifolds and I now have shortie headers. Can they be placed on the motor prior to the install? Is there enough clearence? Just wondering if anybody has done it this way. Thanks John
I would say no. My long tubes actually had to be put in place from underneath with the motor loose in the engine bay. Took us like 20 hours to get the old motot out and new motor in and headers bolted in....
in some cases you can get by with installing one of them(I usually try to do the one with the least clearance).. and twisting the motor/trans slightly to clear the header while dropping it down. At least you get to save half the time of having to install both once it's down on the mounts.
The Doug Thorleys are pretty easy to install, just do them after the motor is in, it'll save you and chance of scratching them, or the engine bay.
Thanks guys for the feed back. I was sure of the answer before I asked the question, but I thought I would at least try. Doing things under the car with out a hoist just hurts this old body.
